Thanks for the latest version of the catver.ini file. Unfortunately, the problem still persists. In this case, the categories stop updating alphabetically by ROM name around Virtua Racing ("vr"). A sure fire test is to see if any of the WWF games come up with a category set. So I am not wasting everyones time, I downloaded a fresh copy of the complete 0.143 Mame ROM set last night(in case I had some old files sticking around in my directory) and used it with the 0.143 catver.ini and the other data files. The problem still shows up. Can I do anything else, like running with an increased debug level, to try to further investigate the problem? Or if anyone else has the complete 0.143 MAME roms collection in GameEX and using the latest 0.143 catver.ini file, can they look to see if the WWF wrestling games(like "wwfwfest") show up with a category attached to it (it should be "Sports / Wrestling" using the latest catver.ini? I am attaching my gamelist.txt file for reference. In this file the updating stops around the ROM "vr". Maybe it is a memory corruption issue because there are so many ROMS that it craps out after a point? (Using my developer train of thought). Thanks. gamelist.txt

Okay, here's what the deal is. I downloaded the catver.ini file from that site and used it. GameEx does fill in some more of the categories with it. However, this file is from 2005 (over 6 years old!) and is not as "good" as the one that came with GameEx since that one is more up to date. As a test, I loaded the GameEx catver.ini into another frontend program, QMC2. This program has categories but is limited in many ways compared to GameEx. The categories look correct in that program with the newer GameEx "catver.ini" whereas in GameEx some of the categories are not populated (like "wwfwfest") which is the potential bug I have been describing. Is there any way that I can help the devs look into this by either running GameEx with a higher debug level turned on, or by sending some more data files over? Let me know if there is anything else I should try.

I'm using the category files that came in the data directory of GameEx 12.0.6. I've attached my gamelist.txt file which shows the problem with the category missing from the ROMS I mentioned (some w and all of x,y,z). I also zipped the catver.ini file for reference. gamelist.txt catver.zip

Looking at the catver.ini which is sorted by ROM name, it seems everything alphabetically after "wildplt" doesn't have a category set in the gamelist.txt file. Note that the gamelist.txt file is sorted by game name and not ROM name so was a bit hard to compare. So it really only affects ROMs with names starting with w, x, y, z. So there isn't that many. I noticed it in the wrestling category because some ROMS start with the the 3 characters "wwf" so they don't show up. I don't see anything obviously unique at the breakage point that could be messing things up.

I am a paying user of GameEx (Just bought it the other day) and using the latest version 12.06. I've just noticed that when you search by category for MAME games, some of the games are not showing up in the correct category. I am using Mame 0.143 with a 0.143 ROM sset. I've debugged this a little and found that even though a category is listed for some games in catver.ini, it doesn't update the gamelist.txt file with the category in some instances. Take for example WWF WrestleFest(wwfwfest), I do a view by category for "Sports / Wrestling" and it doesn't show up in the list. In fact the list ends suddenly after the letter "T". If I just look for the game normally, ie. not by category, it shows up in the program. Also when you look at the detail screen for this game, the category is missing (Which seems to be the issue). Looking in catver.ini, there is an entry for "wwfwfest", so that looks good: wwfwfest=Sports / Wrestling But when I look in gamelist.txt, the category is not seen in the proper location (It is empty) even though I did an "Update Lists" in GameEx: wwfwfest|WWF WrestleFest (US set 1)|Technos|1991|True||True|H|320|240||[-LF-][-LF-]10 selectable wrestlers fight in a tag team tournament or take part in the Royal Rumble.[-LF-][-LF-]|42[-LF-]262[-LF-]6167[-LF-]623[-LF-]961[-LF-]3393[-LF-]4827||0|False|False|joy8way|7056[-LF-]7057[-LF-]7058|wwfwfest.c In the setup wizard I tried turning off the filter there to see if there was an issue with it but it doesnt seem to matter. The log file shows no errors (appended it bellow). I am using the "Data" files that are in the "GameEx/Data" directory and pointed to them in the setup wizard. Can anyone help me debug this?
