Thanks!! That kind of defeats the purpose of a frontend, though. I think this is some kind of bug in the program. ???

After posting in the thread regarding the GELW wrapper, I thought a wrapper might not be necessary. It was confirmed that GameEx would actually unzip a 7-ZIP file on "execution" - and after looking at its "execute before" and "execute after" commands (for mounting the image) I figured it was in the bag. After GELW crashed because I didn't pay attention to the prerequisites, I noticed a subdirectory left behind in the ROMS directory entitled "Unzipped7-zip." The main problem is that it doesn't appear to unzip them properly; my Saturn cd-images are in BIN - CUE format, and it leaves a BIN of 3 bytes, and a CUE of 3 bytes, in that directory. I've verified that GameEx does display its progress bar (after "selecting" or "executing" an image from within GameEx) for the same amount of time that 7-zip would take to extract the files, so I can't think of any reason why the files aren't written properly. This is probably why the image mount commands passed to Daemon Tools (which for some reason is in something called "command line secure mode" which forces me to OK every command passed to it) failed. SSF (which I probably won't continue to use because it runs, looks, and sounds like ass) exits immediately, I verify the unmount command, and I'm back in GameEx. If I manually extract the files with 7-zip, manually mount them in Daemon Tools, and then run SSF.EXE, it does indeed load the correct cd image. Any ideas?

Sweet. To where does GameEx unzip the file(s)? Is it configurable? Since this is the case then GELW can skip this step and just mount it from where GameEx puts it, saving a step and giving the user at least a GameEx progress meter to look at, rather than a DOS prompt or... blank screen [shrug] for 30+ seconds.

I'm not entirely sure how I forgot that basic requirement that you listed quite clearly in your post. I guess I'm getting old I'm leery of installing .net 3.5. I remember once installing .net 2.0 and having it hose most of what I had that used 1.1. Noted, thanks. I'll make the changes when I get home. No. WinRAR uncompresses a RAR containing file X at least twice as fast as 7-zip uncompresses a 7Z containing file X. I didn't try using 7-zip to decompress RAR files. It's all command-line anyways so that could probably just be an .ini addition.

WANDS, man. WANDS. Pfft.

ROFL. Acoustic couplers connecting at 28.8, and viruses that have true-color, animated faces *singing* at you... which are impossible to detect because such programs only occupy two kilobytes, and such. I'll hand it to you. Me at that movie was almost as fun as the time I attended The Craft with my Wiccan friends. I think they said "Laughably stupid; preposterously inaccurate." They summarized it better than I did when I forced those poor bastards to watch "Hackers" with me.

I like a lot of foreign and independent stuff, which makes me sometimes a hit, and sometimes a *hit. I do "movie night" every once in a while at my place and next on our plate is Machine Girl. Right. So... I'll do y'all a favor and keep my recommendations outside of that, and also outside of the "so bad it's good" genre, too. In fact, I'll recommend just one flick. If you like The Matrix, do yourself a favor and see the most underrated sci-fi/action flick of the 21st century, Equilibrium. Yes, Christian Bale is more than the sum of his parts as the American Psycho or as the Batmans. Do yourself a favor and see it. It's great. SPOILER ALERT Actually, this probably isn't much of a spoiler. This flick is a mix of 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 with a seasoning of "Medicated Nation"... Indeed, while you're at it, treat yourself to some real music.

I'd like to request that the "feature requests post" become a "feature requests forum" wherein feature requests occupy separate threads, rather than separate posts within a single thread. It would be a heck of a lot better organized and (!) easier to search (!). I work in software and hate bugging things that are already bugged, or requesting features that have already been requested. Since I have to page individually through over three dozen pages, though... eek. Thanks for your time! EDIT: This was... supposed to be put in the feature requests post... [blink] That's almost funny.

Thanks for your reply. Unless I'm missing something, GameEx *only* has a play / pause toggle, rather than a dedicated play, and play/pause toggle like the TiVo / PS3 remotes. That would be a slight improvement. It's a limitation, be it a tiny one. In any case, we still need keyboard equivalents of the following: Music Seek Forward Music Seek Backward Fast Forward DVD/VIDEO Rewind DVD/Video DVD/Music/ Video Stop DVD/Music/ Video Play I know I'm in a tiny minority here, but I have an HTPC; further, one which uses neither MCE nor the MCE remote. I think in the spirit of DIY - and GameEx is *definitely* something for do-it-yourselfers! - the compatibility should be widened. If I were a programmer, I'd simply donate all the features I wanted. Unfortunately in this case, my area of expertise lies in technical writing, and I'm no, no, nowhere NEAR guide-writing capacity for any aspect of this program. Someday! Thanks again for your replies; I'm very happy / relieved that folks here are so helpful!

But GameEx will unzip it, right? The tool-tip in the setup wizard says something to that effect.

But GameEx will display "no games found" unless the archives are in a format it supports. It's twice as fast as 7-zip - and 7-zip only compresses on average less than 5% better. Bottom line, I'd rather spend 20 extra megs to save 30 seconds. I may do that. So far all I've done is successfully crash GELW. I've converted one of my .RAR Saturn archives to 7-zip (these are bin/cue) to test. Near as I can tell, I've got everything configured properly. See anything wrong down there? All the paths are right. COMMENT SATURN (SSF) WORKINGDIRECTORY "C:\EMU\Saturn\" REGISTERDT "C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\" REGISTER7ZIP "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" UNZIP "%2" IDENTIFY BIN CUE MOUNT LAUNCH "C:\EMU\SATURN\SSF.EXE" "%T" UNMOUNT CLEANUP GameEx displays a progress bar for about 30 to 40 seconds, vanishes, then I get a window regarding GELW crashing. Any ideas? This happens on both the bin and the cue.

Thanks for your reply. All the remotes I've ever owned that control media playback - from the VCR to the Laser-Disc, the various CD players, and from the DVD player to the Blu-ray, have had separate play and pause buttons which control separate and distinct play and pause functions. (EDIT: Correction; the PS3 remote's "pause" function does act as a toggle so long as playback is started (DVD / Blu-Ray). However, play is still play, and pause toggles playback, once started, between a play/pause state.) Switching from "the way it's been for a quarter of a century" to something else takes some learning... which must be unlearned when I go back to controlling any other playback device. Also, sometimes either the PC's receiver does not receive the remote's command -- or the program being controlled does not respond immediately, leading the human controller to assume the former. Said controller may then resort to pressing the button many times in order to ensure that the command was received, which, in a "play/pause toggle" scenario, results in undesired operation. Ultimately, I'd say the "play/pause toggle" control is a drawback for any but a "robotic" controller which lacks the capability to discern, for whatever reason, whether or not media is in a "play" or "pause" state. Regardless, having separate PLAY and PAUSE functions does not preclude the possibility of maintaining a "play/pause toggle" function. Winamp's global hotkeys allow for all three. [shrug] Certainly not at the top of the list as far as priority is concerned, but I would really like to see GameEx become more "HTPC-friendly," and this is one of many small steps along that path.

Thanks for your reply. What I asked was if the wrapper supported something other than 7-zip. Specifically RAR. The comment about GameEx was that it (as far as I know?) also does not support something other than 7-zip (well, and ZIP, but let's not dwell in the realm of the obsolete). 7-zip compresses only marginally better than RAR and (in my benchmarks) takes at least twice as long to extract. I'd rather spend ten extra megs to have a CD-image that extracts in 30 seconds, rather than wait for a minute or more, since it's going to happen on-the-fly. But, it's pointless to ask this question if GameEx doesn't support RAR-archived ROMs/images. I would like to ask in what capacity GameEx *does* support 7-zip; wouldn't wrappers like this be unnecessary?

This sounds like a good addition, but I've got a couple of questions before looking at it (I'm still just getting my feet wet with GameEx, and have got a LONG way to go). First, does this support something other than Daemon Tools? There are other disc-mounting utilities that have command-line support. Just curious; I can always use Daemon, to be sure! Also, does it support something other than 7-zip, or would that not matter since GameEx (apparently?) does not? I'd rather use RAR to keep my drive images compressed, because 7-zip only gets on average 5% better compression, but takes (at least) twice as long as RAR to extract. Since this is occurring on-the-fly, I'd rather wait 30 seconds than over a minute.

Thanks for your reply. On that note, it'd be nice if Play and Pause were separate keys, since they are on a remote. To answer your question, though, these are the keys (on the page to which you directed me, that somehow I didn't find on my own ) for which the "keyboard" column is marked "N/A:" Music Seek Forward Music Seek Backward Fast Forward DVD/VIDEO Rewind DVD/Video DVD/Music/ Video Stop DVD/Music/ Video Play Thanks again for your assistance!
