You scared me straight. I picked up a tiny little fan from radio shack that I was able to fit in the case and it seems to be doing the trick. The temp hasn't gone above 44C after 2 hours. It was at 52C after 1.5 hours with no fan. Thanks a lot for your help!

Sorry, I'm more special needs than that. Is there a guide to setting up a MAME favorites folder somewhere? Or can you please tell me where to put this ini file, and where to tell GamdEx about it. Sorry to need handholding. Thanks, Dan
-
Thanks, speedfan is pretty cool. It can only read the temp of my HD not my CPU. The HD gradually heats up to 52C after an hour and a half, then it hangs at 52C. It's also kind of a hot day out today. So I guess the computer is running on the hot side, but it's not totally awful. Am I crazy to just leave it as it is with no fan? Dan

This seems useful, and I'd like to use it. Would anybody mind helping a newguy. How to I use this list in GameEx? Thanks, Dan
-
Oooh. Thanks. This is what I was thinking of. And of course after poking around more, I figured out that like almost every other feature I can think of, GameEx already supports it. Under Advanced MAME Mame Settings (4) there is an option to "Show Live Online Lists" where GameEx will create 2 lists, 1 of the MAWS Hall of Fame, and 1 of the most played by the GameEx community as collected by Game Extender. And the lists are dynamically updated. Pretty damn awesome. I also found this thread on the forum that with an .ini file that categorizes games based on how well they work and how fun they are to play. I'm not sure exactly how to utilize it with GameEx, but I know it's possible, because Tom posted a list specifically for GameEx. I'll study it and try to figure it out. http://www.gameex.info/forums/index.php?sh...762&hl=MAWS Thanks for listing your favorite games. I'm pretty open to any style, just trying to avoid the duds.

The arcade version of NBA Hangtime runs slow for me as well. . I'm using a mini-ITX mainboard with no graphics card, so I have limited capabilities. I'm using MAME32. Any ideas how I can increase performance? I didn't see an option for the "Frame limit disabled" that you mentioned. Dan

That's awesome. This might be what I need to buy to get NBA hangtime for project 64 to run.

Thanks. I'm not sure I can prune it based on categories. I like the golden era (80s) games, just not all of them. Does anyone know of a good list of the best 25-50 arcade games of each decade? Thanks

Thanks for checking it out. The dremel is pretty sweet, and I'm sure will come in handy. As for the lack of fan...there's not much room left for a case fan. The heat sink has a little fan on it. The Nintendo case itself has little vents. Since I'm new to building computers, I really don't know how concerned to be about heat. Should I buy a thermometer and stick it in there to see how hot it is when running? What temperature is dangerous? I've tried to limit play to a few hours at a time. Dan

Hey guys, I have tons of MAME games from the 80s and 90s on my machine now, almost too many. There are so many I've never heard of, I was curious if there was a good resource where Mame games are rated. Or just some way of figuring out which games are generally considered good (besides the obvious pac-man, donkey kong, etc.) Also, is there any way to see global statistics of the games the GameEx community is playing? Since GameEx keeps statistics on how many times and how long we each play different games, is it possible to conglomerate that info into global statistics info? Wouldn't it be cool to see what games we are all playing the most, and what games are put in the favorites list the most often? Dan

There's an enable favorites option in the "enable/disable features" part of the setup.

I finally finished the project and took some pictures. Details of the build, with more pics and some videos are here: booteeee.blogspot.com Let me know what you think!

Cabinets and HTPC Setups Running GameEx
daweinst replied to David R Hilgendorf's topic in Gamer Rigs
I built a mini-IPX based computer in an original NES case. It emulates MAME, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, and WinDVD. I use the GameEx shell and GameEx to control it all. Thanks for everyone's help getting GameEx configured. GameEx rules!! Click here for full details of how I built it: booteeee.blogspot.com- 363 replies

This is a very clever trick. The GameEx dvd player works for me...it just doesn't play the movies in Dolby Surround Sound. I just followed your description to setup a DVDs "Emulator" to launch movies with Winddvd. Thanks for the idea. Dan

Hi, I'm having the same issue with the menu bar showing on Zsnes. I couldn't quite follow the instructions above. I don't have some of the lines that were mentioned in my config file. I've attached the config file. Please help me out. I'd love to be able to load SNES games without the emulator menu showing. Thanks! Dan ZSNES_V6.zip

Ahhhh, I see. THANKS!!!!

Even when I select the surround sound audio channel via the DVD's menu, gameex still does not play surround sound.

ok thanks. I zipped it and it's attached. GameEx.zip

I have 330 Mame games, 966 NES games, 948 Genesis games, 845 SNES games, and 315 N64 games (wow that feels kind of good to write )so it's not a function of me having way more genesis roms than other systems. I've tried it enough times now where I'm fairly certain it only plays Genesis games. Same with the screen saver only playing MAME. What's the best way for me to show you my GameEx.ini file? I tried to upload it and attach it to this post but I got this message: Error Upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file. It's really long so I don't want to copy and paste the whole thing. Is there a certain section I should copy and paste? Thanks, Dan

I have a similar problem. I just installed WinDVD 9. When I play a dvd through the WinDVD player, I get dts dolby surround sound via my SPDIF output. In the GameEx setup wizard I have "InterVideo Video Decoder" set as my DVD MPEG 2 Coded. It's the only one available in the pull down menu. I can view dvds through gameex, and I get good sound via the SPDIF, but it's not surround sound. Is the "InterVideo Video Decoder" the WinDVD codec? Any ideas how I can adjust it to play surround sound? Thanks, Dan

I have GameEx set up with 5 emulators: MAME32 (Arcade) Fusion (Sega Genesis) Project64 (N64) Nestopia (NES) SNES9x (SNES) All of them work great and GameEx has been working very smoothly loading them perfectly when i pick games. When I try to play a random game, it always loads up Fusion and plays a Genesis game. Any ideas why, and how I can make it pick a game from any of the 5 emulators? Also the screen saver only plays MAME games, even though the "Also Other Emulators" is set to "yes" in the setup wizard. Thanks, Dan

I second that. I'm really, really impressed with GameEx. It's pretty rare that a software program works exactly as you'd like it to. Every time I think "hey wouldn't it be cool if it could..." it turns out that feature is already included. I'm using GameEx on a mini-IPX pc that I built into an NES. Setting up GameEx was by far the easiest part of the build. Thanks Tom!!!

Completed Feature Requests (Moved)
daweinst replied to jr9770's topic in FAQs, Guides, & Other Useful Information
Oops, I didn't quite understand what the "program to shell" option was. It is exactly what I was asking for. This program is really amazing. So many awesome features. You did a really great job. -
You're right, there it was. Pretty amazing how damn customizable this thing is. thanks for the help.

Hello, I like music in the background when i'm navigating the gameex menu. I would like that music to stop when the screen saver starts. Is there a way to do this? I've tried to have the music as ambiance or played through the jukebox, both continue playing on screen saver mode. My audio settings pause the sound when manually entering mame, but when the screen saver loads a mame game, the jukebox continues to play. Thanks, Dan
