Hello all.

I heard about GameEX over on the BYOAC forums and decided to give it a try.

Although I can't see how GameEX could make configuring any easier- I had a few hours worth of problems- which I solved by checking out the faq and some forum questions.

Very frustrating.

Then after spending all that time just to get MAME up and running- I've encountered more trouble.

1. When I select a game to play in MAME it takes a good while just to load the game, really irritating. It also takes a half hour just to scroll down to the game I want- just too damn slow.

2. The actual MAME games only play at half speed-if that. WTF?

3. I've had GameEX freeze up on me about 6 times and I actually have to manually hold my computer's power button to shut off my computer and do a restart. When I do a Control+Alt+Delete and choose to end the process, it just stays frozen, wow. Very few programs require me to do this when they freeze and it seems a little unacceptable, actually that's totally unacceptable. What's up?

I'm running at 3.4 g with over a gig of ram and GameEX just seems like a total joke so far, nothing but a headache.

BUT I KNOW THAT'S NOT TRUE.

I know that GameEX is an awesome program, but from what I've seen so far- I don't see much point in me wasting anymore time on it.

Am I just having bad luck, being impatient or what?

I'm afraid to even try any more games, because it freezes up and I have to shut my whole computer down-

I don't mean to bitch, but wow- what a nightmare so far.

Any advice from anyone would be appreciated.

You are by far in the minority here....this is not typical by any means.

What OS are you running?...is it stripped down?...is it warez?...do you have an up to date antivirus application...have you scanned fairly recently? Do you have a Anti-Spyware application...have you ran that recently?...have you defragged your system recently?...do you have a shit load of background applications running?

Over all the nick you picked...and the context of your post seems like a troll.

1. Mame launching is dependent on the access time of your HDD...Mame loads with in a few milliseconds on my system & game is ready typically with in 2-3 seconds.

2. Mames running speed has nothing to do with GameEx

3. This has only happened to me when scanning for MP3's...and has more to do with my folder structure than GameEx

Over all your post still seems like a troll...

WTF? Is this for real or did Enoch change his screen name so he could get on the forums again after being banned? Seriously though dude, if you need some help, there are plenty of folks here that will help you, no need for the attitude. I'm not a moderator but I know the Mods here won't put up with that kind of talk here for long without banning you, so maybe you should re submit your question a little more constructively. You can start by posting your GameEx log files.

Are the games running at full speed outside of gameex? Are you using the same command switches?

What is the processor? Pentium 4?

Hey, thanks for the replies.

Troll? I don't know what that means, but I assume you mean I'm just here to casue trouble- fair enough assumption, but I assure you that's not my intent.

Everyone seems to love GameEx, and after watching the demo video I was impressed.

The configuration was really frustrating for me- but I realize that was my problem and not GameEX.

The fact that I keep having to get up and shut off my computer manually because GameEx keeps freezing my whole system was almost the sole reason for my negative tone. Didn't mean to offend anybody, but it is what it is- I'm not making up the problems I'm having.

I'm running Windows XP SP2

3.4 G processor

over 1 G of ram

Mame32 plays the games just fine, at full speed.

I have AVG Anti-virus: I update and scan daily.

I have Spybot Search and destroy and also update and scan daily

I defragged my drive less than a week ago.

As far as I know: I'm only running the necessary background programs.

That's why it's so frustrating for me-

I wasn't intentionally being a prick.

I apologize-

hmmm...

Okay try this run GX in window mode, along with Mame...launch a mame game from GX then bring up the task manager and see what is eating your cpu cycles...then report back.

I just ran all the games I was trying to play in GameEX using MAME 32 and they all worked fantastic, played at full speed, booted up quick as can be.

Another problem I kept having, and I have it when running MAME 32 by itself is my monitor keeps losing it's signal when I'm switching games. It's a 32" flatscreen LCD and it frequently loses the signal when using MAME.

All I have to do to see the screen again is just turn up the volume or change the channel and it's back to normal- what causes this?

I was able to run GameEX in windowed mode, but not while playing a game- it reverts back to full screen when I choose "play this game".

As far as I can tell nothing is using up all my memory: GameEX is using about 50-60 MB, SVC Host about 30 MB and a few other things. My total CPU usage percentage appears to be in the single digits.

I'm supposed to have over a Gig of RAM available- but it never seems like I do, nothing seems to run a smooth or fast as I would like, but I've never found any problems that I can fix.

Oh be sure to cover the basic's as well...latest .Net installed 1,2 and 3....tho I think only 2 is required...but make sure to apply any updates to them...additionally make sure you have the latest DirectX installed for XP...I think its like 9.0c or something like that.

If you have an ATI video card you may want to search the forum...there was an issue with them in some manner...but I don't recall what it was or how bad it was...and what needed to be done to solve the problem.

As for your monitor you're likely using a resolution and\or a refresh rate it doesn't support...most LCD's I think refresh at 60hz...so ideally set mame to run at your monitor's native resolution & refresh rate...same applies to GameEx.

Posted

As for your scrolling down through the Mame Game List....this might be an issue of incorrectly configured codec's if you are using Video snaps...if your not using video snaps...it could be the snap shots & titles names are not matching up with the roms...so GX is having to do more searching and guessing than what would be typical.

Another possibility if its not video's being used is that the file format for the snaps\titles is not one of the preferred formats typically JPG & PNG...or the file extension has been changed to something other than what it is...which could also cause problems...so if anything try disabling snaps & titles for the time being to see if that speeds up your scrolling through the game list...at least it would help narrow things down.

Question what does you commandline look like for launching Mame...I think Brain once mentioned that Tripple buffering will nuke performance on some systems...there is a fairly recent thread on this...you may want to search it out.

Posted

Another thought on your load time issues with Mame...the roms what archive format are they in? Ideally they will be in TorrentZip format...and if not hopefully just Zip...I think Mame can handle 7zip & maybe even Rar...but with higher compressing comes longer load times...given that most the roms for Mame are very small high compression is not a desired thing as there would be very little gain in space savings...and a huge gain in load times.

Heres what you can do first....

Just exit gameex and everything. Go to start>applications>gameex>run last game.bat

That should load the last game you tried to run in gameex. See if it runs slowly from this launcher as opposed to gameex.

The one thing that stands out for me is that you say you should have 1G of memory - do you, or don't you? Right click on "My Computer" on the desktop, and see what it says.

As for the rest of your post, Gameex is a great program, and these guys will help you, so take a deep breath......and relax!

Also, don't be one of those people who doesn't try the advice that has been given, it will take effort on your part too.....

As to the slow scrolling, you say:

It also takes a half hour just to scroll down to the game I want- just too damn slow.

Is it actually scrolling slowly or is it taking forever because you're only going one game at a time? GameEx has an Alpha Paging function where if you hold in the Alpha Paging key and then press right/left on the joystick you'll jump to the next letter alphabetically or up/down you'll go up or down one full page. If you're not using this then yes, it will take forever to scroll through your list to get to your game, especially if it starts with 'Z'. ;)

Holy shit I wake up and all this? What a great username ;)

I still havent seen a log file. (its located C:\Program Files\GameEx\LOG)

If gameex is freezing it could be your pc doesnt have enough resources. Any freezing your experancing should only be a tempory freeze while paging memory. As some gamelists get quite extensive. Not a system lockup.

Also Like shaunopp said gameex has alpha paging. Hold buton 1 and go up and down your lists it will go a page at a time instead of a single entry.

In the advanced configuration (gameex) you will see advanced mame setings. The first line is what show you what switches are being sent when you launch a game. I like to remove -tripplebuffer as it helps performance of mame.

Please post you log so we can see whats going on. Also disable any programs running in the backround. It defently sounds to me like a resource problem.

We can try and figure this out politely. Your first post doesn't give a good impression and we wont tolerate that.

I can say that I never had any problems installing "mainstream" emulators like mame or Kega. But what i typically do is start with one emulator and get that running the way you want and do minor tweaks. When you get that one working perfectly start with another. In my experiences with anything that is technical shotgunning or doing things all at once really makes it hard to troubleshoot the issue.
