I'm looked through the myriad of posts on here regarding Daphne but, cant for the life of me find the solution to my problem. I have Dragons Lair and Space Ace working fine through daphne loader. I've double checked all my paths in gameex but, I keep getting the following error -

--DAPHNE version 0.99.7

--Command line is: Daphne.exe dle21 vldp -fullscreen -x 800 -y 600 -nohwaccel -framefile I:\GameEx\downloaded emus\Daphne\framefile\lair.txt

--CPU : AuthenticAMD 2000 MHz || Mem : 2048 megs

--OS : Windows NT/2000 || Video : NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO

Setting screen width to 800

Setting screen height to 600

Could not initialize video display: DDraw created surface with wrong size

Video initialization failed!

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong please guys?

Two questions... 1) Does this command work outside of gameex... go into dos...navigate to your daphne folder..run the command... The command does look good. Of course I cannot see the framefile info... the framefile points to the video location and the starting frame.

2) Id try removing the.. -x 800 -y 600 ... Just for kicks

3) in gameex daphne has a set of default options... You might want to remove the -x 800 -y 600 from there as well..

Good luck and report back

Arrgh, bloody daphne....

Ok, after a day of messing around with different combinations Dragons Lair now works from gameex first time (although sometimes just audio) Space Ace works but doesnt respond to any keyboard input (thus is unplayable).

I got this far by disabling the vista aero theme and just using the vista basic theme, and also removing -nohwaccel from the command line.

It seems like a memory issue to me (although I have 2Gb) I dont get it!!! Both games work everytime from daphne loader even with vista aero theme enabled.

What is the command that is run when you use the loader?

It might tell you in the daphne log.

So far it looks good..

Have you tried in the daphne setting under gameoptions to remove all but -VLPD and -Fullscreen

Just for fun

I dont know if it matters but, looking at the logs, it appears that daphne loader runs the -fullscreen command after its looked at the -framefile command. Where as gameex runs -fullscreen after its set up the vldp. Could that make any difference?

What is your desktop resolution?

Try adding the line back to game option to reflect your current desktop res.

-fullscreen -x 640 -y 480

Maybe

-fullscreen -x 800 -y 600 or whatever .. Also try telling gameex not to change resolutions in display settings.

I dont thinks so... Have you tried running the runlastgame.bat outside of gameex...

Its located in the gameex programs group

My desktop res is 1440 x 900, although I run gameex at 800x600. I'll try what you've suggested and report back tomorrow, it's getting late here and I've had enough daphne for one day... Thanks for your advice so far though. :D

Well that means gameex is creating a good command... I am more inclined to believe that it is due to the fact that you are running such an obscure resolution. Gameex is changing it to 800 x 600 while active... Of course then daphne launches and tries to change it yet again...

Id try telling gameex not to change resolutions and see if that happens... I mean since the command that gameex uses is working then its a gameex issue..

I believe it has to do with the switching of resolutions all the way down to 640 x 480

Gameex default is Not to set resolution below 800 x 600.. Play with the displaysetting in the advanced config.

1440x900 is the native res for my 19"ws, anything else looks rubbish.

Well I've been playing with the display settings all day, using different combinations. The odd thing is, is that one combination will work for a couple of times and I think I've cracked it, then next time I try one of the games I get the error again!?!

At least I know that if I need too then I can run them with daphne loader with no problems. I just don't like it when things beat me.

Thanks again for the help Brian.

-fullscreen -x 1440 -y 900

Put this in the game options filed.

Also have gameex run at this res in the display settings and tell it not to change it.

but before you do run this command from your daphne folder

go to DOS and type CD "I:\GameEx\downloaded emus\Daphne"

Then

daphne.exe ace vldp -framefile "I:\GameEx\downloaded emus\Daphne\framefile\ace.txt" -fullscreen -x 1440 -y 900

See if it works

I also notice this from your sapce ace log

Space Ace log -

--DAPHNE version 0.99.7

--Command line is: I:\GameEx\downloaded emus\Daphne\daphne.exe ace vldp -framefile I:\GameEx\downloaded emus\Daphne\framefile\ace.txt -fullscreen

--CPU : AuthenticAMD 2000 MHz || Mem : 2048 megs

--OS : Windows NT/2000 || Video : NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO

Usually when you have spaces in your PATH you need to define quotes

I:\GameEx\downloaded emus\Daphne\framefile\ace.txt into "I:\GameEx\downloaded emus\Daphne\framefile\ace.txt"

I can feel that you are close

I don't believe it, that's done it. I've just run both games over 20 times in different instances of GameEx (just to make sure it wasn't just luck) with no problems.

I cant thank you enough Brian, you persisted with various ideas where as others might have given up, until we found the solution. You are a star, thank you.

Set GameEx to run at 1440x900 and 'not to change the res' and -fullscreen -x 1440 -y 900 in the daphne game options field did the trick. I get an error in the daphne log about it trying to run at an obscure resolution everytime, but it works so I dont care. :D
