There are quite a few arcade emulators. I know in order to play House of the Dead and similar I need model 2.. are there other times I would want to choose other emulators over Mame? Or would setting up MAME and model 2 be sufficient?

Really depends on the rom you're trying to run. A good source would be NonMAME. It's lists the roms that have trouble in MAME and suggests the emulator to use to run that particular rom. MAME, model 2, and maybe ZiNc would be all good to have. Being that these are all integrated into GameEx's MAME functionality pretty much says it all.

Thats exactly the resource i was looking for. Thank you! I saw those included in gameex as well as FinalBurn etc. But I read somewhere they used to be more relevant but with recent updates they aren't necessary anymore, so I wasn't sure which emulators that was true for. Also, most of the posts I found were from many years ago, so I figured things have changed.

Thanks again

No problem. Other emulators have configs for setting up in GameEx but as far as having MAME integration, then MAME, Model 2, and ZiNc emulators are what's included. There are ways of using other emulators as well to launch certain roms with a different emulator based on the MAME list but the ones mentioned are in code. It's a good place to start off with and then go off of NonMAME's suggestions to have a more complete working system.
