Hi,

Is it possible to have control settings per-game say for example with the c64 emulator Vice ?

Some games for that system require extra keys like the space bar and even the whole alphabet if the game needed a name typing.

I have looked at using xpadder but really i'm unsure if emulating the whole keyboard (on a gamepad or arcade cab) is the way to go with this.

Is there a better way to handle this kinda thing ?

I don't think you can with the emulator internal options. I use Vice and CCS regularly, and the joypad is configured once for all. The keyboard input is assigned to specific keys just because the original games require those keys on the keyboard. But if xpadder isn't your cup of tea you can try a very little and useful program like JoyToKey, which allows you to convert joypad into keyboard input. But you still have to configure each game accordingly, or at least, since C64 uses only one key for fire, you can assign all the remaining buttons to the most common used keys. I think this is the best solution.

Actually, using Xpadder you can do this on a per-ROM basis.

Name your profile for that game the same as the ROM name, for example:

FILE: Cool Dudes On Pizza Cutters.zip -> PROFILE: Cool Dudes On Pizza Cutters

Then in LaunchBefore you call it up using the command line like this:

LaunchBefore=C:/Xpadder/Xpadder.exe "[ROM]" /M

The "[ROM]" variable passes the ROM file name without the extension, so it will call the profile you created.

I use this method for all my PC games, since no two Windows games are ever the same.

No idea how to get around the need for a full keyboard though. That one will be a bit more tricky. ;)

Wow , thats a really neat solution !

I've seen a 'typing with gamepad' solution on the xpadder forums so i guess its not impossible.

Hopefully the games i want won't need the whole keyboard anyway.

Many Thanks !

No problem. Glad I could help. :)

I have really grown to love Xpadder. If you hit any snags we'll be here for you. :)
