map different version of mame

I can't map a different version of mame for certain games. I can't really figure out from the documentation how to do it. Has anyone been successful running two versions of Mame and mapping certain versions of mame to certain games?

Are you mapping the games by hand or are you using the utility that Tempest put together? I did it by hand when Tom initially implemented the feature and it worked fine. I think most other people waited until the utility was available, but I haven't heard of anyone unable to get things working at all.
