Tom, I can't thnk you enough for this amazing front end. It's awesosme.

OK now that I have figured out how to add ClientServer MESS to GameEX, I would like to make a very heartfelt and sincere plea to you....please please please PLEASE add netplay support for ClientServer MESS into GameEX the way you did for ClientServer MAME. I am absolutely LOVING mess! It's awesome how it allows you to play games from so many different systems from one emu. So if you combine that ability with being able to play its games over the net thanks to Digital Ghost, we will have something very special! Is this something you are working on Tom?

Oh and has anyone by any chance tried playing a game via CS MESS online? How exactly does it work? Does it need to be done via a command prompt? If so, having Tom integrate it into GameEX would eliminate that process and make things much easier for those of us scared to touch command line stuff :)

Isamu,

Well, I am not Tom and can not speak for him. From my personal experience MESS as an emulator is not as good as most standalone emulators. MESS is fairly new when compared to the likes of nestopia.

For me when I want to play an emulated game I look for a few things in an emulator. 1)compatibility 2)accuracy 3)playability

We all know MAME strives to be accurate, at the expense of integrated hacks, hardware acceleration (to an extent) or other workarounds needed to make games playable.

Mess is a product of MAME (of sorts) Sure it may be accurate, but it is far from complete. It does not emulate many systems very well (from what I have tried personally) which is a deal breaker for me.

I am sure as a developer if Tom were to take is time to write something up, he would like people to use it. For one, I do not know many who use MESS for more than atari. So Im not sure the demand for such an integration.

lastly, the client server mame integration received less than stellar comments from some people at byoac. Mame team is very funny about things sometimes.

So when we think of compatibility, the want, the work, the reward. Im just not sure if it is worth it.

However, like I said I am not Tom.

At the same time, we have had over 80 views to this thread and have not had an out pour over how good an idea this is.

Not that I am saying its a bad idea, it just not be good timing.

I can tell you that we are pleased you are enjoying Gameex, we have a great community and Tom does listen and implement features that are requested.

If you like you can add your request to the feature request thread.

Take care and happy gaming

Brian

I honestly can't believe that it made it this far...

@Isamu-----only thing we can look foward too is that given time, most likely LOTS of time, eventually M.E.S.S will steamroll all these standalone emu's in terms of accuracy :P

I to must admit that I like M.E.S.S. though I only use it for atari 5200,7800,colecovision and vectrex,it would be cool to play that online like mame.but maybe after the M.E.S.S team hammers out better emulation on the more popular systems.(nes,snes,genesis....)

I don't get it. What's wrong with snes emulation? I tried super mario allstars and it seems to to work just fine. do most of the games run like crap or something for you guys?.

they have made major improvments to snes, when compared to bsnes or zsnes, the emulation just isnt as good.it gets pretty choppy on mess.and some games dont run at all.like I said before, given time mess will emulate better then the standalone emu's we have now

Hi mesk and thanks for the reply. Mesk can you do me a favor? Would you mind listing your PC specs, as well as naming the games that don't run or run choppy for you?

I'd like to try them out and see how they run my machine :)

As you can see here....SNES emulation status is imperfect compared to other emulators. Other emulators just give better emulation. As mentioned, may not always be the case but for the time being, it is so. Another site comes to mind when checking for emulators that run better than mess. It is the basis in which I chose my emulators aside from testing myself. The site is called NonMESS.

There are plenty of emulators for various systems and we all have different opinions on them. So best thing to do is test the emulator itself and if gives the results you're after then stay with it.

Yeah I hear ya Freq.

Just as an FYI, I have been using ZSNES for over a decade, and you guys are absolutely right about MESS not being as good as the standalone emus. But here's the thing.....Although ZSNES *DOES* have it's own netplay function, it is less than impressive, as the devs have admitted. Desyncs are plenty and lag is am issue as well. That is why I am curious to see how well Digital Ghost has been able implement his own netcode into MESS. From all accounts, he sounds like he is committed to making it function extremely well. There are not a lot of alternatives out there for netplay in emus for either SNES or worse, NES/Genesis. Can you guys think of any? I know Kega Fusion does it too but it desyncs a lot.

Have any of you actually gotten a game online with Client Server MESS? If so, what system did you play and what was the experience like? Laggy? Or GGPO-ish?
