New to GameEX...how do you adjust and change MAME options?

Hello gentlemen. It's nice to meet all of you :)

Tom this is by far the best MAME front end I have used. Very sophisticated and has a lot of features! Great job my friend :)

I gotta basic noob question....I am running Windows 7 and have always used the MAME32 version of MAME. Since this is the first time I am using dos mame via this GameEX front end, can you tell me how to go about changing the default MAME options? I'm referring to things like resolution, blitter effects, sound options, cheat enable/disable, etc. I've tried searching around the GameEX Basic MAME and Advance MAME Config menus and do not see anything related to these options I mentioned above. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Settings can be made by the command-line itself or by creating a config file and changing those options. From command-line if you use the following command, a config file will be generated for you.

MAME.exe -cc

Then those settings can be adjusted within the file and it makes things easier to deal with. All those settings are included within the documentation included with MAME.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not really comfortable using commands, so what about if I use another simple mame front end and make the changes via the frontend instead? Will the changes then "stick" and be applied upon running GameEX?

MAME32 creates it's on config file as well. Don't quote me on this but I believe it's mame32.ini or something to that nature. Then can just rename to mame.ini and put in main directory and it could/should work. LOL. Sorry not much help outside of that since haven't used mame32 in many years. Working with command-lines is not that bad. Besides, your using a frontend that utilizes command-lines. Maybe someone will be of more help but it's a pretty simple process.

I hate to ask such a dumb question frequency, but how exactly do I open the command line prompt in MAME?

No worries mate. All you need to do is:

From the Win7 desktop, Click the Windows Start button

Within the search field, type CMD and hit enter

A new command window will open (Looks like a DOS window. Little black window with white text)

change to the directory where you have MAME installed. (typically you use the command cd directoryname * For example: cd \users

Once in the Mame directory, type mame.exe -cc

I'm almost certain that you can use the mame.ini file that you have been using with Mame32. IIRC - The mame32.ini file is actually the ini file for the mame32 gui.

Note to self: Post #3000 :)

I have found that if you have MameUI to run as a program inside Gameex, you can make navigate to MAMEUI through gameex and then make the change to the MAME games properties. Close MAMEUI and you are back in gameex ready to play the game with the new change. I have found that the resolution is the most common setting that needs to be changed.

Tempest, some of those 3,000 posts have really helped me out in the past, thanks!

@isamu I was completely uncomfortable using command lines when i started using gameex about 2 months ago,and to be honest, before that i had never used them period i always used a gui emulator, but after a little self teaching,(and help from the ppl of this forum)they now come like second nature (is that the correct phrase?)to me and i actually feel a little foolish that i let then intimidate me before.you will have them down pat before you know it :P
