- GameEx 5.23

  • OK, the new working of show
desktop was not working for everyone so I've
reverted back an tried a new approach.
  • There's a new display setting
to hide the desktop. With this setting on when in
full screen mode GameEx will hide the desktop
ICONS, and set the Wallpaper to tiled black. This
is a much better approach, and assuming you have
no other apps open, the transition to apps and
emulators that need the show desktop setting
    should be normally seamless.
  • I also modified the wait
before keys setting to be used even if no keys are
specified, as HideOS.exe is not closed until this
    timer has passed.
  • Therefore to load Visual
Pinball seamlessly set this setting to about 8000
    (8 seconds)
  • Fixed: text and layout now
resizes correctly when going from windowed to full
    screen.
  • Fixed: Snap and background
videos now show and reload when changing Windowed/
    Full screen.
  • Just to clear up things about
.net framework 2.0. GameEx does not use version
2.0 (yet). You should install 1.1.
  • Microsoft seem to be creating
a bit of a dll hell situation with the different
versions. If you have version 1.0 installed,
Windows Update will give you the option to
download 2.0 only. Where GameEx runs on 1.1 with
    support for 1.0
  •  .net 2.0 if installed
broke GameEx previously even though GameEx will
only use 1.0 or 1.1. The update was to fix this
issue and make GameEx work if you happen to
download it from Windows Update or use it for
other apps. Installing .net framework 2.0 will not
improve or affect anything in GameEx in any way
    (at the moment)
  • Everyone finds this very
confusing, and MS does not seem to attempt to make
this better understood. They often don't tell you
at face value even if your using a beta version,
or provide good versioning information for Beta
versions, but still encourage you to download
    them.
  • I do plan on starting to use
Visual Studio 2005, and I will be upgrading GameEx
to use Visual Studio 2005 and .net framework 2.0
in the future once I have some reserve cash to buy
the development suite, and I see some benefit in
    upgrading.

Hi Tom,

Version 5.23 is working great so far. Is it possible to change the time GameEx hides the desktop with that new display setting? Visual Pinmame now just needs a hair longer to be hidden before its finished loading a table. :)

Thanks for all the recent updates! Oh for some reason I thought you were here in the US :)

If you set Wait Before keys to something like 8000 it should hide the startup of it,

No worries, it's normal.

Your desktop shifted? What version of GameEx are you upgrading from? I have been upgrading my mame32 and GameEx with no graphic issues since 5.11. Are you talking about all you desktop icons and such?

Please stop this behaviour, your sending PM's to me and posting at the same time, and also double posting, your trying my patience. Are you over 16 (as specified in the forum rules)? I can only put your rudeness down to you being very young.

Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you!!!

I really can't take credit for it, it was by HeadKaze, who seems to be a very talented chap in all areas of IT.

Thanks to both. Excellent integration. You ease of install Tom is what makes GameEx great. Front ends that are a nitemare to config make things frustrating.

My System 1 Cab is finally stripped and the Mame machine running GameEx will take place of the old Indiana Jones guts!!

Picture to follow on the cabinets page...

hmm 5.22 the way you were hiding the desktop seemed fine to me, i'll try this later :/ maybe you need option for desktop hide method or something.

update: ok 5.23 seems ok aswell for me, except two things:

1) its possible to leave your desktop black - not the worst thing in the world, but something i saw.

update: yeah still black after changing desktop colour.. what's up with that?!

2) having problems transitioning in and out of Fusion (Sega emulator). anyone else seeing this? (stuck on black screen, fusion running and using lots of cpu time). not sure if this is new or gameex problem because havent used fusion in a while. have to force kill fusion.exe, then gameex comes back fine. (showdesktop=false, this def used to work ok a few months ago).

I didn't know you had to send keys for Visual Pinball? What keys need to be sent? If you were supposed to send keys, then I think we have found the problem a few of us were having. Perhaps hiding the icons and wallpaper was an unessessary move. I think the older method of hiding was better than hiding the icons and wallpaper anyway.

Also, found a small bug on this release, after launching GameEx and exiting it changes my wallpaper from being stretched to tiled.

1. The "shifted screen" you describe is simply the wallpaper going from stretched to tiled, as I have already stated in the post you quoted above. Tom is now aware of this, so you don't need to post about it again in obnoxious bold blue text.

2. Use Google, we are not an Internet service which helps people learn how to use ordinary functions of a computer system.

3. How do we know what's on your "Sega CD Roms" disc??

Movieman,

You should check with RomCenter or daphne-emu.com. This forum is only for GameEx support. Your problem is with the config of Daphne which is not very easy to do.

Tiptonware.com offers a automatic configutaiton of Daphne so you might try his set as it is plug and play.

5.23 Bug.

Tom,

Arcade Ambience plays in the background when you go to your jukebox!!! MP3's and Ambience play together. Not what you intended Im sure. Ambience should go to sleep when in Jukebox and come back upon exit of Jukebox.

Tom, now that Visual Mame is launching great, can you do anything about exiting? "The Quit?" dialog box appears briefly when escape is pressed. The visual pinball CAD screen shows for a brienf moment also.

Hey movieman

Your post is not really to do with the original post which is "GameEx 5.23 Released", other posts relate to this release hence being "On Topic". Your last two threads are really OT (off topic) and deserve a new topic. Sorry to be on your back about this, but I'm trying to help you learn the way things are on a forum. Your obviously new to all this, so it's okay. Also, talk about ROMs is frowned upon, so try to keep talk about that to a minimum. And pasting your error log over and over is not needed 99% of the time, so only paste it if we ask for it, thanks.

As for your problem with znes, try changing:

Emu_2 Rom Filter: *.zip

to

Emu_2 Rom Filter: *.smc;*.fig

23:05:06.2 11/26/2005:

23:05:06.3 11/26/2005: MAME is an emulator: it reproduces, more or less faithfully, the behaviour of

23:05:06.3 11/26/2005: several arcade machines. But hardware is useless without software, so an image

23:05:06.3 11/26/2005: of the ROMs which run on that hardware is required. Such ROMs, like any other

23:05:06.3 11/26/2005: commercial software, are copyrighted material and it is therefore illegal to

23:05:06.4 11/26/2005: use them if you don't own the original arcade machine. Needless to say, ROMs

23:05:06.4 11/26/2005: are not distributed together with MAME. Distribution of MAME together with ROM

23:05:06.4 11/26/2005: images is a violation of copyright law and should be promptly reported to the

23:05:06.4 11/26/2005: authors so that appropriate legal action can be taken.

Im uploading 5.24 now which fixes the desktop issues. Its not to send keys. As I tried to explain in this release notes the wait now has an alternate function, in that this is the wait before it kills hideos.exe so the running emulator if just showing in a normal maximized window (not using directx) will then show.

Believe me the other method was very unreliable. This is much better.

There are better ways of doing this, that don't involve waiting. For example, if you use CreateProcess() to launch a program then WaitForInputIdle(), you can then EnumWindows() to match a window handle to the process ID. Once you have the handle you can force it to the foreground and top of z order, thus forcing any other screen into the background. I also have code which can achieve the same result from launching shortcuts (*.lnk). Normally getting a window handle of a program launched by a shortcut is difficult.
