I haven't been using the arcade for quite some time. My Mame Rom Set is 0.114. I see it is now up to 0.136. I have clrmame and have watched how to update sets but I'm unsure what files / steps are required to get to the latest version. Do I have to find several intermediate update sets ?

Thanks for any help.

I assume it would be almost impossible to answer your question without breaking any forum rules.

If you use CMP, and a .dat for mame1.36, CMP will create as many .136 roms as it can from what you have.

I don't believe much more information can be given without breaking any rules.

Postscript:

I did not use any words starting with 't' or 'd' in the above post. (I took a little liberty with .dat)

If anybody wants to take a shot at giving more information feel free. There are 2 rules though.

1. Don't use any words beginning with 't' or 'd'

2. No synonyms for the specific 2 words that I think we all know begin with 't' or 'd'

BTW: I deleted the previous answer, because it used both the 'T' and the 'D' words. smile.gif

It is, but we aren't supposed to talk about HOW to get roms. I don't see why we can't talk about how to USE roms. The question may be posed in a way that made it difficult for Tempest to answer.

Basically, take your updated set of roms and just put it in the same directory as your original set. You can use CMP to determine what roms from your old set are still considered current. Those ones don't need replacing, obviously.

For obvious reasons, I can't mention what the easiest way to update that directory is.

It's a tricky subject for sure. It would be best to ask the question somewhere else. But I can't say where. tongue.gif

I woke up this morning wondering if I had made the right decision by deleting chriss' post. I think I made the right decision, however I really was challenging someone to answer the question without breaking the rules. I re-read the question this morning:

I don't know why we didn't think of that sooner. smile.gif

Thanks guys. I think I get it and I don't want to cross lines (delete or edit this if I do). I've read for hours to get back up on how to do this. Ideally I only want to play the games I'm used to playing (say, the Top 100 or so). There is just the option now of high score maintanance etc. I guess I just get the latest version of mame and .dat file and the roms that I have may or may not be updated to latest version with clrmame. If I want more roms (newer ones that have been released since 0.114) or if they need to be updated I'll have to get more. It's probably easier to pick and choose the one's I specifically want than a huge new whole set.

You may be able to compile 0.114 to include the hiscore support. Check HK's MAME Compiler thread. There's a link to where the update diff files are located. If 0.114 is there, you don't have to do anything other than compile MAME!

My OCD is taking control and I "need" to be current. I'm deciding to start retroactively backfilling my Romsets. So far I'm to 0.128 (from 136) and when I finally get this done I'll run clrmame and see where I misssed some files. Just to clarify for others that are in my same situation: I've missed so many advances in the past 4 years I'm "backfilling" my roms from present backwards. eventually I have duplicate Roms and I choose the latest date ofthe files as a reference (this may be wrong and clrmame should rectify).

I'll explain why in a minute.

I edited the previous post because once again, I believe that the rules were broken.

Here's the thing, each and every one of the users here actually own all of the roms that we run in Mame. Now you think that we would be satisfied with the romsets that we own, but for whatever reason, sometimes we want 'newer' roms. There is a website that exists that allows us to exchange our 'dusty' roms with the newer 'shinier' roms. The amazing thing is that this can be done quite simply. All we need to do is use a program called ClearMamePro, to check our 'dusty' roms against a list of the 'shinier' roms. Why do we need to do this? Because it takes tremendous amounts of energy to exchange our old roms for the new ones, and in the interest of saving the planet, we want to use as little energy as possible. (Go Green!) Once we have checked the romsets that we already own against the list of newer, shinier roms, all we have to do is connect to the website that provides the rom updating service, and let them know where we are storing our dusty roms on our hard drive. They will take a look at we have already, and only exchange roms for us if a newer, shinier rom is available.

Also, once again in the interest of saving energy, and the planet, There is no need for us to worry about intermediate exchanges if we have missed a few, just follow the steps above using your old 'dusty' roms, and the latest set of 'shiny' roms.

I hope that clears things up. wink.gif

Hopefully, I haven't broken any rules. dry.gif
