Ever been at the right place at the right time? You know, maybe your walking down the street and find that 20 dollar bill on the ground. You know, it just happens occasionally.

Typically during our past giveaways we wanted to know how great game-ex is or some other contribution driven event.

Not this one. To win all you need to do is be at the right place at the right time. I have a few licenses every year to do what I see fit with and never have really taken advantage of it, Until now.

First person to reply to this thread that needs a license will get it. Thats it, no magic. (pm me your email addy after posting)

After that license is gone, the next users that want to get in on the action will have to simply post here why they feel they deserve it. The more creative the entry the better. It has been a hard year guys.

New years day I will set up a poll and our users can vote for the best story. Poll will close (when I feel it has run its course, probably a couple days so most active users can see and vote) Poll winner gets the license.

So come on guys, lets get this new year started already.

EDIT:

Ok, not many submissions, thread taken off course. Its the end of the new year over here and I see no point in dragging this on.

Yep, do you need it? (if so your the winner) If not lets wait for the next user.

I know those terms are poor at best but I wanted to give away a licence, so there.

I was thinking of doing it for my friend and his cabinet (I've bought my license) but that S.O.B. needs to pony up to Tom for this wonderful software!

Man I'm from Brazil and I need it for My arcade, because GameEx is the best FE that i even seem, and I'll like to show it to my friends.

I'm curious to as the direction GameEx is taking? Is it "really" wanting to be a microsoft media center extender for people to play gimicky retro games on computers set up to TV's set up for movies? I don't know anyone who uses that clunky MS stuff anyway as there is more appealing software out there like XBMC which has great skinning support.

What always drew me to this FE as my favorite was the ease of configuration. But in the last 2 years what it has really lacked by far is theme support. Is even hinting marketing this for mame cabinets realistic? Sure, but who really wants their mame cabinet to look like windows? I'm sure it would fit in with "Powered by Microsoft" and cartoony Bill Gates stickiers plastered onto the sideart.

I was never a fan of HS because it was just too bloated and too much stuff on the screen made it slow, but with Badbill's new release around the corner, I hope this steps GameEx's theme support up.

Thats a bit off topic, ;)

Better off starting a new thread on that one. Gameex can and does look beautiful and does support art, I think what we are lacking is the photoshop users not program ability.

That said, Gameex is a media center, it has jukebox and karaoke and video/music support. HS does not without using third party apps and clever command line launching. I have a few cabs running different FE's for different purposes. Besides, do we really need another HS clone, check out byoac for the variety.

How will the new release of HS step up GameEx theme support? It's not trying to be HS and I don't think any FE can do what HS does better than it.

What exactly do you think is missing from the Theme support in GameEx? What would you like to see specifically?

While the default look of GameEx does look alot like MCE there are quite a few themes available and it's very customizable. You can pretty much make it look like anything you want. Take a look at my

for example. That doesn't look very "microsoft media center" to me.

GameEx's audience is two fold, you have people who want to play retro games in their living rooms and use the HTPC features and those that run it on their cabs. Some use a combination of both, for example sometimes I'll put my cab in jukebox mode. I guess it all depends on what your particular taste is.

I know there is compatibility with Mala themes, I would just like to see a stronger library. Gameex is still my favorite FE just because it's fast and gets the job done. But I find myself more and more just using the windows mame gui, which really cheapens the arcade experience more.

I'm not interested in paying for Maximus. It's more of an eye opener to those looking at investing in this front end. HS may be off subject, but what they have going for them is the art community, which this one is sadly lacking.

Brian,

I would love a free registration for game ex. I just made a mame cabinet out of an old neo-geo cabinet I bought for 20 bucks. I have 3 kids and my niece we just adopted two months ago. I made this mame cabinet for them for x-mas(i finished it yesterday a little late lol). I am kind of tapped or else I would buy it. So hopefully if you have another registration to give away we could give it a good home. Happy new years to all!!

Thanks,

Anthony

I think theme support is a little limited by what GameEx can do, which I will address and improve (for example you can see a step in the right direction with a release just a couple of weeks ago). At the same time though it is limited just a little by what the commnuity provides and kindly shares. I try to encourage as much as I can though. For example I dont see any other front ends where can just go ahead and upload a theme on their web site. I also never see such user input into a product of the same scale that GameEx has if you forget about themes, although Im still very proud of what others have done.

As HK says, your better making suggestions if you dont think its right. As for direction.. You pretty much decide..

GameEx is different things to different people, and also pretty unique really. It sounds like you just run it on the desktop, but I can tell you its looks beutifull on my flat screen HDTV too imho and I always liked the default look personally.
