So when i press the alt enter combo, it goes full screen, getting rid of the tool bar at the top, but the screen ends up getting smaller. Not windowed or anything it just zooms out and puts a 3 inch black marquee all the way around the game. Any thoughts? also, if i get that fixed is there a way to have it start in full screen mode.

Use nestopia, in my humble opinion it is a better emulator.

If you refuse you may want to run the emus video mode at a lower res to get the image bigger, or look for a tick box that streaches the image.

VirtuaNES can be set to fullscreen without the need of entering Alt+Enter by following these steps:

  1. Click on Option
  2. Click on Emulator
  3. Tick Switch to fullscreen on ROM load

And to fix the issue your having with the video not filling the screen, following these steps:

  1. Click on Option
  2. Click on Graphics
  3. In the Full screen section tick Fit screen

I do agree with Brian about nestopia being a better emulator but to each his/her own.

In my opinion compatibility makes a better emulator, having good options also helps.
