I'd appreciate some tips here. Been a Game Ex user and subscriber for a good while now, and I LOVE the product. I do, however, have a problem I can't seem to figure out. When I'm using gameex and run certain mame games...fighting games are what this happens on almost always, occasionally the game will end emulation and kick back to the front end. This usually occurs when we're playing two players and six button games...ie sf2 or killer instinct, etc. We do not have any problem using outright mame with these games, and play the same games that kick us out with two players and zero problems. It's definitely related to key-presses and I'm at my wits end. We use a standard 4 player I PAC....is there a key combination i'm missing that will kick us out ? Any chance we're overloading the buffer somehow and causing this? Is there a way to make gameex absolutely not end the game unless a key is pressed? I'd appreciate some help fella's.

Hmmm, Try opening a game and pressing the p1 and p2 coin and start buttons the same time.

Tom has some kind of a hard coded quit button combo coded into GameEx, but I don't remember what it is. That's probably what Brian is suggesting with his suggested test. I'm not sure there's a work around for that other than reprogramming the ipac, if that's what you are running into.

Ok, narrowed it down. Hitting 2 and 4 on any mame game exits me ut. Only in gameex. Weird eh..triplechecked...I can find it in anything i entered.

Check that...hitting 4 and 2 together kicks back to gameex on EVERY emulator i've tried....

Have you taken a look in WinIPAC to see if you have a SHIFT key combo setup that is pressing the ESC key?

OK, final report. This is odd..I'll have to say. After full experimentation I determined that hitting the 2 key and 4 key would kick you out of any emulator to gameex. I also found out that hitting the 4 key and the 6 key also had the same effect. I looked through EVERYTHING that could possible have been entered by me, including the suggestions ya'll kindly made, and found nothing. I finally had to basically kick out the 4 key for another. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but still I find that pretty goofy overall. After the 4 key was removed from the equation, we're running like a champ. If anyone ever has a thought on this, lemmie know.

Fixable..strange but fixable.

Thanks ya'll.

as far as i know hitting 2 and 4 key is the hard coded gameex exit combo. you can't do much about it except change your layout to other keys!

Wow, tremendous find there sir. I looked all over and never saw that. I was in error in my last post...the 2 and 4 exited and 2 and 6 would also exit. Strange thing to hard code in really....those are two very oft used keys, and with people running a zillion keys on their control panels now, I bet that comes up alot.

Still, easy to switch for me. Again, great find, and thanks for the help everyone.

boy im glad that i use a keywiz its cheaper than the i-pac /j-pac and it only uses numbers 1 and 2 all the other inputs are lettter's or command keys (i.e enter ,shift ect)

It has nothing to do with whether an Ipac, or a keywiz is used. It has to do with what keys a user chooses to program into their Ipac, or Keywiz...

well default the keywiz is perfect i have never programed one just wire it up and play

the op says keys 2 and 4 cause games to exit back to the gameex frontend so i asumed that the i-pac /j-pac by default use # inputs instead of letter inputs as default (why have to program somthing like a keyboard encoder when mame is fully configable)

and with a price tag of 45-50$ compared to the keywiz price of 25-35$ it is a no brainer wich encoder is better in my book (pluss randy at gg just kick's butt his repro tron and satan's hollow handles are awsome)

You ASSUME incorrectly.

It's a better encoder because it's cheaper? An Ipac2 is $39.00 not 45-50$, And I never tried mounting a tron handle to it, so I don't know if it would work correctly, or not. ;)

I have bought, and will continue to buy from both Randy, and Andy. I just think your statements are misleading.

I ASSUME that the Ipac referred to here is an Ipac4 which is a 4-player unit. The Keywiz is a 2 player unit (I'm not sure if there is a 4 player one available and I don't feel like looking). Anyway, by default in MAME (and by default configuration for the Ipac4), player start buttons are 1-4 and player coin buttons are 5-8. If you have a 4 player setup, then pressing p2 and p4 start buttons simultaneously will apparently exit back to GameEx. This has nothing to do with Ultimarc or GGG products, it has to do with the way MAME's default keys are set up and a decision Tom made in having the two buttons hard coded to quit the emulator.

I ASSUME you are correct. You almost always are... :)

I would say always, but I bet you were wrong about something once. (Along time ago, in a galaxy far, far away) ;)

Bahhh, I'm wrong a lot of the time. When I am, I go back and edit the post so it looks like I'm right. ^_^

Hehe that reminds me of a time when I quoted tempest for somthing so even after he edited his post it still was there about the other. I cant remember what it was not off hand but it was a setup I can tell you that.

That topic ended with "Here Fishy Fishy", as I recall. Just in case you want to find it. :)

I wish I could remember the important stuff....

I know what you mean! I mean, Tempest used to be a total NERD! But, look at him now... Well, maybe that's a bad example.

What was this topic about anyway? Hmmm, oh yeah, someone was having a problem with MAME or GameEx or something? Ehhh, I guess they should pipe up if they want more help. Maybe we "helped" enough already.

It seems resolved a while back.
