Okay, an update about the graphically intense 1024x768 TunnelVision Theme I have been working on. If you haven't read any of my postings in the Themes thread, a short recap...

My first theme attempt, wanted something flashy and avi intense to compare to the flashy front ends out there (best of both worlds this way since no other front end has as many features as GameEx). So also able to learn Premiere Pro while creating TunnelVision. The problem is it is big... huge even. So after some responses and posts with Tom the idea will be to try to split it into sections. The first sections are ready to be tested. Tom is testing section 1, and it would probably be good to have a few people download and test it since it is so large, before it is available to everyone on the whole.

It is not for older machines, I tried it on an older machine and the graphics bogged it down. So will need a strong machine running it at 1024x768. I only have just so much bandwidth available to me, but I have it online (section 1, the basics) and I am looking for about half a dozen volunteers to try it out and give me some feedback. Then will put up the other sections and Tom can host it for all if people want to try it. Please IM me if you are interested in testing it and I will IM you the link. This section 1 is about 270 megs in size. Here is a sample of section 1 Section 1 Small Sample Video (It's an avi file, so may need to right click and save link to download it for viewing)

I am using edited custom menus, and these are my matching files by line so you can see what to use or how to match up your menu items to appropriate graphics and avis.

Hmm, it has a videobak.png file in the media folde of the theme; that should work in place of a similar videobak.bmp file. See, THIS is why testers are needed. :) Unfortunately so far, you are the only one to show any interest in trying it out, at least so far.

You could try saving the videobak.png as a bmp file to see if that works (still don't know why the png doesn't work; it works fine on mine). If that is the issue, every one of the *bak.png files will probably need changing to *bak.bmp files (there's like 7). Let me know if that makes any difference.

You also arre trying at a different resolution thann 1024:768; don't know if that could be part of the problem... I am going to try changing resolutions and see if it causes any errrors...

Ok, I was missing videobak and startbak graphics. Now I get this error and it is a little more vague. Although it may be trying to decode the video file. And I can play the video in mediaplayer. Any thoughts?

Not offhand. I made the theme and got it working on my machine and never imagined it may not work on others because of the video not playing correctly. I have it playing on a 1024:768 fine, tried on a 800:600 and works, though sluggish (that was on an older computer though). I tried playing with the resolutions to see if that caused any problems. At 1920:1080 it starts, but then crashes within seconds. I tried changing the advanced config to "not" have gameex change resolutions and it worked, but when playing at a bigger resolution the image placement in the theme is all screwed up, so I would not recommend playing it at over 1024:768 based on that.

These were created in Premier Pro using the Cinepac Codec by Radius; is there another codec I should be using to create these which everyone should have and can use with GameEx? I am no expert by far, maybe Tom or someone else that has played with the theme making with video backgrounds may have an idea. It may end up being something I can only run personally, which would kind of suck; but then again quite frankly there doesn't appear to be much interest in it anyways.

I redownloaded the zip and reinstallled the theme and it works.

I think it has ALOT of potential. Id like to help out with some of the graphics.

I think the splash screen with all the consoles thumbs is convoluted and doesn't go with the theme. I also think the text on the video should be using a different font and color. It also doesn't seem to match. The gameex logo I think stands out too much and maybe some transparency should be used so it is more subtle. The videos are awesome and I think your off to a really great start. I cannot commit to any type of time frame for testing but I see a really good theme here.

If your interested Id like to get a copy of your PSD's.

I can't seem to view the AVI...neither on my Mac or my Windows box. Some special codec required, perhaps?

BRIAN:

I could try rounding up the videos backgrounds, PSD template, and images and zip them up when I get home from work tonight.

GRYHND:

Maybe that is why people aren't interested in trying out the theme if they are unable to see the avi preview. I condensed it as much as I could and maybe the codec isn't a primary one. Will have to look to see what I used. I had made it with Frap, then condensed with Premier to a flv and changed to avi. I think it was the Cinepac codec

Got it. I had tried VLC on my Mac to no avail, but VLC 0.9.4 on my old Win2K box worked. It reports the codec as VP6F, if anyone needs to grab that.

Looks slick :-) I haven't messed with themes at all yet...not enough time in the day!

I'm interested. I should have posted sooner, as an encouragement, but I didn't. :(

My first impression, was that it wasn't a theme for GameEx, but the best damn advertisement for GameEx that Tom could ever want. (Not to knock it as a theme :P )

I'm probably the only one that feels this way, but the two tunnels are a bit much for me. I think it would be cool if you had one tunnel, and when you selected an item, you zoomed down the tunnel to the next page. It would remind me of a video game I used to play... If I could only remember what it was called... Hmmm Tempest maybe?

Anyway, great job! This is by far the best demonstration that I have seen for the capabilites of GameEx. Don't get discouraged!

It's cool, but my machine isn't likely up to the task. I'm in the market for a new theme, but don't think I can load this one (and didn't want to take the time to download such a massive one as a test). Basically, I'm saying I'm lazy :P

It looks great though!

You aren't :) After watching the entire AVI (twice), I started to get a little woozy :-) I still think it is cool, so mucho kudos there, but I'm not sure how long I could take the tunnel before I got sea sick :-D

OTOH, how long do we usually spend sifting through menus before picking a game or other app? It might not be as big a deal in actual usage.

The link to the avi was way back in the first post, repeated here Sample AVI

BRIAN: will pack up avi files and zip for you tonight for the background avi

After I tweak the background based on observations by Brian, I think then I will post just the avi background for everyone. Then if it works fine, post the main theme with stationary graphics, and perhaps all the video menu selections individually so people can pick and choose. With customized menus not everyone may use all the videos I have used anyways.

This way I can do some alternate backgrounds and people can either use the one they want or use a different one for each area background. Can anyone tell me the best codec to use for encoding in Premier Pro? Well not really the best best, I mean the best as in "most common so everyone will have no problems watchng it" best. :)

Damn I can ramble.... this was supposed to be a quick reply when I sat down...
