Oky ive having to build a new PC due to my Kids .........

So ive got the following for it that im useing

q6600 quad core

8 Gb OCZ reaper memory (it was cheap)

now i can eitehr run Windows Xp

Windows Vista 64 bit

windows vista 32 bit

Now i know if i run XP or 32Bit windows ill only end up using 3gb of ram but i know that all the emulators will work with it fine.

So the question is any one running windows Vista 64 Bit and does every thing work with it .... Are there any problems i should know about before testing it and haveing a Go at 64 bit .....

I would go with XP64 if you can. I don't see it listed as a choice though.

in fact I would avoid XP 64Bits

It doesn't have a lot of support from Microsoft or hardware manufacturers (read no drivers :) )

Vista 64 Bits, on the other hand is well supported.

Actually I'm running GameEx on a Vista 64Bits ultimate, and everything is working well, except 16 Bits apps of course ;)

Vista 32 and 64 cost almost the same price, and you've already got 8Gb of memory, so go for 64 Bits.

Now, the real question would be Vista now or wait for Windows Seven :)

If you do choose to load XP 32-bit... make sure you install the Vista codec set. It works great, much better than the FFDshow set.

Also... I had Vista running on my set, an older AMD 3200XP, 2GB ram, 6600GT GPU.... and I had issues with MESS. Most notably the Vectrex set. It stuttered and would not run right.

Other minor issues with MESS were the Odyssey2, and Atari 2600. Just some freezing, then it would work.

So I fell-back to XP and all was and has been perfect.

I hope that helps a little.

Don't forget that you will be limited to 2TB partitions if you go with a 32-bit OS. As I recall, you had an 8TB raid on your system, so if that's still the case, you will be somewhat limited. 2TB is a lot today, but I would go with 64-bit to avoid limiting yourself.

bkenobi. Yes there was lol ... Ive Luckly not lost my full raid set so im taking this chance to move every across to 2 Gb partitions . Im using raid 5 this time just in case.

Gone for 64 bit vista for now. ill see how it goes.

Thks for your help guys.

I'm running RAID5 on my server but admittedly haven't needed to test out the rebuilding capabilities yet (thankfully). If I were building today and had more resources, I might even opt for a RAID6 capable card just to have the ability to add a second redundant drive to the array. I'm only running 3 drives at the moment, so having RAID6 is not really critical.

if i could afford a nother controlelr id go for one but need to sort out my arcade system first. ive had to put off loads due to what happend. Ill sort the software out on this system then carryu on with my build of the arcade system. Its taken me now approx 48 Hrs just to get to a point were ive recoverd most of my work but lost about 1 to 1.5 Tb or stuff. But thats fine i can just get it all back at a later date off my old arcade system.
