I've been trying to add games to an arcade cabinet at my work place (more Street Fighter and Marvel games specifically). It has the standard 6 button layout for players 1 + 2, player 1 + 2 start and insert credit buttons and another button to return to GameEx.

When I copied the roms over to the rom folder in MAME most of them didn't show up on the list. I followed the guides by changing the config settings (filters etc) and they showed up in the list but black screened and returned to GameEx when I tried to play them.

So I tried another approach and copied over MAME32 into the GameEx folder to replace the MAME folder. Now the roms were verified and showed up in the list and I could play them. A simple button remapping (player 2 buttons 5 + 6 etc.) was needed and everything seemed fine until I realized that now the joystick controls were messed up. Pulling off special moves was nearly impossible now as opposed to before. Walking left and right, jumping, ducking all work fine but special moves were very unresponsive. Does anyone know any way I could fix this?

Could it be something simple like copying over the old ctrlr folder from MAME to MAME32? Any help would be appreciated.

Dump MAME32, go back to MAME, and update the list. They won't show until you do that. :)

Sorry I forgot to mention that I updated the list first and still most of the roms didn't show up. The only way I could get them to show up on the list was by changing the filters etc. but although that made them show up on the list, when I tried to play them they black screened and returned to GameEx.

Basically when I update list in MAME most of them dont work and when I do it in MAME32 they do work but the joystick controls are unresponsive.

Make sure your roms and MAME are both the same version. If they don't match, you might have problems.

Also, try running the runitgame.bat file in your GameEx directory. This file contains the commands that GameEx used to launch the last game. If the game doesn't run there, it won't run in GameEx. You will probably see an error when you run that file, so use that info to figure out what needs to be done to get it going. You can post the error message here if you want help deciphering it.

Yep, as Ben already put it, it sounds like you are using a recent version of MAME, with old games. That blank screen means that MAME did not like the game and kicked you out.

So all that's needed is an older version of MAME? Any idea which version I should look for to play X-Men vs Street Fighter, Street Fighter Alpha 3 etc?

Well an older version is not necessarily needed. You could still run into problems with an older version. ROMS need to match the version of MAME. So whichever MAME rom set you have then you should be using that version of MAME. If you're unsure of what MAME roms you have then there's no simple way of really knowing. I suggest rebuilding your set to match the version of MAME that you choose. IMO would suggest just using the latest version.

I don't know if this is related, but my roms are version 0.119 or so and MAME 0.130 will not play most Street Fighter or King of Fighter titles. These all worked fine with MAME 0.125, so there must have been something changed in the last few releases. I have 0.130 roms on my server so I'll just have to update them (just haven't gotten to it yet).
