EmuMovies site directs users with questions to this forum, so I'm gonna ask in here

Over the last 3 days I have downloaded almost all of the videos of thier FTP that I think I'm going to need for my cab. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the videos I have obtained from them. Yesterday I was configuring my atari 2600 video clips, and everything went smooth, but the 2600 clips have a loud popping sound at the beginning of ALL the videos for me. I'm unsure if this is something with the videos themself, or a problem with my system, as the popping sound is present on two different systems I have played them on. I tried a to use fraps to create a video, but fraps doesn't seem to record video with the stella emulator that I'm using. I also tried Cam Studio, but was having problem getting the audio to work at all. I was just wondering what program was used to create the 2600 videos that are posted on EmuMovies site. All I'm looking to do is replace a few select videos without this popping sound.

Any Advice / Suggestions?

Thanks in advance as usual :D

I think the fastest way to get an answer is searching on the emumovies forums. I'd bet circo mentioned there somwhere what he uses.

The only forums it has links to are for here and arcade controls

If it's a single pop at the beginning of the file and you can verify that it's present in the file (not a codec issue), then you might just want to edit the video to remove the first second of audio. There are tools out there that I've used in the past that allow you to tweak the video and audio layers separately and then recombine. I can't remember what the tool is called (I used it for transcoding video from my Tivo as I recall), but you might be able to find it at one of the following links:

Sorry, it's been a long time since I used it, but it was awesome! Maybe there's an easier way that someone could suggest...

Or you can do the real easy route... turn off the video sound and use the Jukebox. ;) It's a real memory jog when you are watching the videos while listening to some classic 80's music like Journey, Rush and all the rest. Really sets the mood right.

What FTP program did you use? I tried pulling them down from the Torrent using BitLord, but it would not connect.

Thanks,

if you want to edit the pop out at the beginning, use virtualdub! go to video, select direct stream copy. then go to audio, select direct stream copy. now go to the beginning of the clip and play it. set the in point behind the pop sound. then click on file -> save as avi

this tool is really easy to use and non destructive! I agree with imbezerk though. I listen to 80's music while skipping through the games list!

VirtualDub is probably the one I used. It sounds familiar anyway.

I vote for no audio in video snaps. That's the easiest thing to do and it can improve performance of the system considerably.

Hmmmmm,

Well, I think this popping sound I'm getting may be a problem on my end. It seems I get this gnarly POP everytime I stop or start the clip in any spot. I have never had any luck with codecs. The clips play and look ok, but this pop has to be a problem with the audio part of my codec. I have Divx and xvid and the ac3 codec installed, so I'm not sure where else to go to solve this issue. I see a small divx watermark in the lower right of the clips, so I'm assuming thats what it was converted with. I may go with music for sound later, but for now I'm just trying to get it configured this way. Still trying to figure out a way to record a few of these clips from stella myself.

try uninstalling all 3 codecs and install a codec pack like k-lite codec pack or vista codec pack (works for xp).

I think you can use FRAPS to record the movies in Stella. As far as the popping, it might be your sound card. I had a problem with my SB 24bit 5.1 Live! card. I kept getting popping, and interruptions in the Dragon's Lair game. I pulled the card, and used the on board Realtek AC'97, which worked great. No more issues.

Following IMBerzerk's suggestion could do a lot. I had a weird problem where I couldn't get FLV videos to play. No mather what I tried. I tried using latest as well as suggested build by tom of FFDSHOW, seperate FLV codec, Nemo codec pack, etc. But nothing would work. Then I tried the current still latest version of Vista Codec Pack and it suddenly worked! So maybe it will do wonders with you also :P

Well, I uninstalled all my codecs and installed the vista codec pack. Everything seems the same, including the pops stopping and starting the arari 2600 videos. Those are the only clips I seem to have problems with. I tried to record my own atari 2600 videos using fraps while running the stella emulator, but for some reason fraps doesn't seem to recognize that stella is even running (I don't get the FPS in the top left). Maybe I'll try another emulator

Yes, I have no sound card, I am using the onboard Realtek AC'97 codec also, which seems to work fine for most anything I throw at it.

well you can change the audio codec for the videos with virtualdub. select for video direct stream copy and for audio choose full processing mode. then click on audio -> compression and choose a different codec. then again go to save as avi. if you dont know whcih audio codec to choose i recommend googling for the radium mp3 codec.

that should definatley fix this issues if you only experience the pop sound for one set of videos...

I'm no expert on codecs, but I know that just uninstalling what you have and installing a new one won't necessarily fix things. If you miss the codec that your media is using during the uninstall, the new one still won't be used. There are tools available to see what codecs are installed and being used that would help with this. Also, a good codec will include an application to pick what you want to use. I know the Vista set includes such a utility and you can manually change what's used for different streams.
