What rom type does Mess use? My roms from PD don't seem to work.

Perhaps you should ask whoever provided you the rom you are talking about? MESS plays a bunch of systems, so the answer is it depends...

Any known naming convention should work. No-intro uses a52 , TOSEC uses bin, and Goodtools uses both bin and a52. They might include a mixture of them in all naming conventions as I haven't looked at each and every file.
