Yep, HD crashed.. and now it's all gone.. everything. I was actually planning on buying a portable HD and backing it all up, but the Gremlins got to it first.

I lost everything.. all pictures, games, videos.. everything. I do have the core MAME stuff on DVD, so I can at least get that going again... which brings me to a question.

I have a problem already with the FFDshow codecs and GameEx's latest release. My game videos look all smeared and full of blocks and distortion. The PC is plenty fast and I am using an Nvidia GT6600 with the latest Nvidia core drivers (1.82). Also, I am using the newest version of FFDshow. Anything ideas why this is happening? I have GameEx set to the Pentium4 settings, if that even matters.

1 of many questions to come..

Thanks,

IMBerzerk... and totally depressed over this. :(

Bummer...

Yeah, you can't imagine... or I wouldn't want you to imagine is more like it. It really sucks.

I didn't think of this earlier, but I lost a hard drive once, bought an identical drive, swapped the controller, and all of my data was still intact. Maybe your controller went out like mine did? It's worth a shot...

Sorry to hear that man. I have to reformat my primary hard drive (it's in a heap) and i've been putting it off for months - just the thought of it alone !

Did the HardDrive just stop functioning and you assume the data is gone? Or did you get the hard drive going again and saw that there was nothing on it?

There may be some hope still. Like Tempest said, it might be a bad controller which can be repaired. It could also be a bad motor... Does the Hard Drive show up in the BIOS?

Oh no, there is no hope... sounds like two Chinamen in a World Class Ping-Pong match. Then the scratching... oh the scratching.... like nails on a chalkboard.

I can get the games working fine. GameEx is that easy, and I have a lot of my old discs with many of my ancient roms that I've been using.

It's all the screenshots, titles, box art... etc.. all the name associations, and details that I lost. That's hours and hours of work....

I already started on Vectrex, so far so good.

i constantly thinkabout backuping my 250 gb hard drive in the arcade!

but then i think i could download everything again in case it crashes (chkdsk already found bad blocks on it so maybe it wont take much longer before it dies). i dont have personal data on there so it wouldnt be a bad loss

it would still suck to find all the goodies again!

i'm sorry to hear about your crash, bezerk! good luck in getting all the files back quickly!

Chriss, nice to hear from you. Back-up the drive.... this REALLY sucks having to do all this again. I thought the same thing, no biggie, I'll get it all back.. no way. Some stuff I even found on eBay. I won't be seeing those pics again. :(

I'm sorry to hear this mate!

i know you are right! i still have an empty 250gb especially for the backup! it just sucks to get the hd out of the cab...

i tried to use a bootable usb drive to boot into pe and use driveimage or ghost but i cant boot from the pen drive. it is working as a bootable device on my other computers though. so maybe i have to attach a dvd rom drive somehow or really try to get the hd out of there!

I think you got me going again, I will do this today! :)

When I am done, I'm just going to copy all the files on to a 4GB thumbdrive. I don't care so much about the MAME stuff, as I have it all on DVD's. It's all the other emulators, the games, the pics, boxes...etc.. that all has to be name matched to the GameEx databases... coverted from GIF to JPG or PNG... stuff like that. That's all the hard/time consuming work that needs to be done.

You had to see my Channel F set of pics. It was nearly complete... I know it's a crappy system, but my cabinet was more of a 'hall of fame'/museum moreso than just a game playing machine.
