how can I exit games in Gamex without enter key

I have programmed an escape key button on my cabinet so i can exit games. The button works fine, but then Gamex asks me to 'continue' or 'exit'. I cannot select my choice without a keyboard.

I have programmed a button to be 'enter' and I have tested it with utility programs and it works, however no matter what I try, Gamex will only accept the enter key from my keyboard.

Obviously this is frustrating, since once I get it all working great, there will be no keyboard connected.

Hmm... Did you try using the setup wizard and redefine your inputs?

Do you mean the GameEx setup wizard ?

If so I have checked the inputs and if you notice there is no 'enter' input.

There is 'select' which is set to A which is fine, but I can't find the setting for 'enter'

Also I found a section in the FAQ regarding remapping keys.

Q: Can I map the the keys and buttons GameEx uses to something else on my keyboard or game controller?

A: Yes look in the GameEx 'Config' folder for a file called custominput.ini. Open this file with notepad (Start - Run - Notepad - [OK]). For a keyboard - reference the file 'scancodes.txt' and put the appropriate scan code number after the equals sign for each navigation control in custominput.ini. For a game controller use the appropriate button number. To see what your buttons are on your controller, test the game device via windows control panel.

To then use the custom input configuration, turn it on under the input settings in the configuration application.

I tried looking into that and noticed that 'return' is keyboard key #28 in the scancodes.txt but that didn't help me when I looked at the custominput.ini I didn't see anything regarding 'return' or 'enter'

You'd think this was a pretty easy thing to figure out. What does everyone else with a mame cabinet do ?

I guess I'm confused. You can use GameEx with 2-4 buttons just fine. By default, the 'Enter' key is select, so maybe I'm not understanding what you need. If you are asking about the dialogs where you are confirming a selection (delete a rom, update the mame list, etc.), you use the select key which is 'enter' by default.

I got it to work. I found a forum thread ( which I think you helped solve ) regarding rekeying for a game pad. The thread talked about UI and defined it as User Interface. When I press Tab when the came is palying UI came up but I never knew what it meant. I went in to the global UI and changed the appropriate line and now it works great. I guess i am just starting to figure out what controls things. I thought GameEx was controlling things but I guess the menu that pops up when you press Tab is Mame32 ?? Am I correct ?

Thanks for your help.

Oh, I see what you are saying. Yeah, you need to configure MAME/MAME32 with it's own setup independent of GameEx. The exit key in MAME/MAME32 is under the General tab called "UI Cancel".

Glad you got it going!
