12th February, 2008 - GameEx 9.85

GameEx now scans sub folders within a specified rom folder (AKA Roms in folders). This is a default always on setting, so it if your folders are not tidy it could break existing setups. Because of this GameEx will also rebuild all emulator lists once with this release, and as some of you know this can take a while if your using databases. In addition in order to clean things up slightly, offline list support has been removed (it didn;t work anyway), and map files using the pipe seperator are no longer supported. Again the latter may break existing setups. The roms in folders is probably the oldest feature request for GameEx, so I hope that makes a few folks happy.

Thanks Tom for this release! These are great changes to GameEx! ;)

Why can this roms in folders options not be disabled?

I keep a base folder for all my roms but I then I keep all my unused roms in a sub folders e.g. a Jap folder and NotWorking folder and so forth.

So now I'm going to have to go through each system and either move these folders elsewhere or create a new active folder that will contain the roms that I want GameEx to see which will mean going through each system in my GameEx config and changing all the paths.

A simple "include subfolders" checkbox in the advanced config would've been a lot handier

I agree with Stu. How can this be turned off?

I think the program should support multiple rom paths, not sub folders but that is just my .02.

Its fixed because its right in most cases, and if not can be fixed pretty easily by changing the config. Im sorry you have to do some work, but Im trying to avoid feature creep.

Simple fix for this would be to use a map file and only use what's in the folder you want and strip out the rest of the data. If you open the newly created map file generated by GameEx than it's easy to just delete what you want since everything is in order. Meaning folder and then sub-folders for example:

Roms

|

A (which is Roms\A)

|

B (which is Roms\B)

So can easily just click and drag from A folder on and delete.

Wow, I never thought I would see the day this feature was implmented.

Hmm... Tom how does this work?

Does it look for the rom name to match by looking in folders 1 at a time before it finds them before it outputs the run command? Or does gameex build a map file when you select the system while its "loading" then refrence that file to finish the run command?

Just courious and great job.

Builds the map and now everything left of the delimiter is used to run.

C:\roms\rom.zip "Description"

Note:

"|" delimiter is no longer used.

WOW, roms in sub folders...SWEET!!! B)

I'm at work now so I can't look for myself, but I would like a little clarification. Is the roms in folders feature always on (meaning you can't turn it off), or is it on by default thus requiring a setting modification if it's not needed/desired? I'm assuming the latter, but some of the comments have confused me.

Wow, never thought I'd see the day... But now I won't use it! :P

Thanks Tom! Appreciate the hard work that goes into this awesome program!

All hail the chief! :)

Does this apply to avi and snap folders too Tom? please?

This applies to Roms only. If wanted for these features than post in the request thread and if already there then I guess we have to wait for Tom to approve.

Questions, Questions :)

Biran,

Ive just changed things in 9.86 (uploading now), and it moreso does what you first mention. This was a much cleaner way of doing it, and as I sometimes do, I rushed it the first time, and it just didnt fit when you bring the databases, and game data into the picture, which will become even more important as GameEx moves on. So frequency wont be happy ;) But it works quite well now, or at least should.

Bkenobi,

it is not a configurable setting. I really want to make GameEx more user friendly, and am focusing on that a little, and avoid having settings where there not entirely necesseray. I know it may piss a few of us old timers off, but new users will be happier with it.

9.86 also fixes the create snaps option not showing.

So Tom! It now will just search the folders for the rom name? That still works! As far as using map files though, are they still handled the same or just need the rom "description" method again?

Yes, it should work ok. Back to rom "description" again, yes. Thanks for your help

No problem! So GameEx will still generate the roms in sub-folders. So if the user doesn't want to use subfolder support than they can still use a map file that will include just the roms in the main folder? Also c:\roms\rom "description" method will no longer work, correct?

Asking questions so I can change my Mapping application to handle the change. ;)

Yes, basically, but c:\rom\rom "Rom" wont break anything though, just makes no differnece.

To be honest with you though, with the new database support, map files are becoming a little dated.

So there is or is not a box to turn this off. It is causing major issues with my setup.

There is not a configurable setting. What kind of issues are you having?

Lets see if I can ask this without sounding too stupid. I currently use map files so as to run my iso that have mp3's etc. such as for Saturn.

I run a seperate emulator for each of my consoles.

1) No Intro

2)Japanese

3)Hacks

4)Protoypes

5) Homebrew

So in the above example I'm running in GameEx,5 emulators for each console.

The way I understand the new folder option now do away with my map files and just name the folders the same as the iso. (Thi is the way I have it now).

Is there a way to use just one emulator and by hitting a key a box comes up and lets me pick which of the subfolders I want to display the games for.

This would be a way to have all your roms available but only show the folder you want at any one time. The default woould be all and the choices could be the names of the sub folders.

My pinball games are in sub folders and things are getting repeated in my lists.

My games jump to over 1000 more since this update and I added no new roms.

I"m sorry but this is not a good update when people have dirs set a certain way. This would not be a problem if the feature could be turned off. Creating a problem that was never a issue prior. I am happy for all Tom's hard work but not everything is roses all the time in my eyes... Maybe I should be taking my own advice.

Well no need for maps now if you just use correct filters since it will only display what you want and scan all subfolders. No way of choosing which subfolders are scanned for display unless you create your own map again. Just leave it the way you have it IMO.

Shouldn't be repeated in your list unless you have the same roms in different folders. How is your folder structure now? Actually this is a huge update. People have their directories in a certain way now cuz of the fact that GameEx never had sub-folder support. I'm sure it's an easy fix if you game more detail.
