The PC I was using in my cabinet has died. I'm looking for something that will run games like Killer Instinct smoothly. I'm looking at a barebone kit with an amd athlon x2 4200+ processor and geforce 6100 gpu. Will this be sufficient?

I'd recommend getting a core 2 duo, they significantly outperform amd's

which comes from a conversation in this thread: http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showt...part=1&vc=1

the numbers are from a 64 bit os, which if possible, I'd recommend running as it performs faster if possible to do

Can never really have too much CPU power IMO.

I have a Dual Core in my cab. and have been very happy with it. I guess you really need to set a price range on what you are looking to spend. Easy to add more ram and change a graphics card but a MB swap can bit a little bit more of a pain in the ass.

This is a decent deal. It will play killerInstinct 1 and 2 and a few other chd based games.

However there are not many people that can play games like gaunlet legends full speed using mame.

However with the nice graphics card that is in this machine you can easily play the dreamcast versions of nfl blitzs and legends and soul caliber marvel vs capcom 2 full speed and are very fun on a cab and are arcade perfect ports http://www.gameex.info/forums/index.php?sh...id=51360n

without reading a lot into this

i thought emulators use more cpu rather than gpu

so wouldnt it be better to dedicate cash to the processor rather than the graphics,,

this is a quetion not an answer

MAME uses a lot more CPU than GPU. Many modern emulators leverage the DirectX set to improve performance. Those emulators will definitely benefit from a good GPU. However, that doesn't mean that you need the biggest, baddest video card out there. Get a good video card and spend most of the money on a great CPU IMO.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE Y I NEED A GOOD CPU

I GOT A P4 3,0GHZ HT

GEFORCE 9600 GSO 768MB

AND 1GB DDR2 667MHZ

NO I DONE A BENCHMARK WITH 3DMARK 05

AND GOT 7022 AS MY SCORE,,

I WAS TOLD I NEED MORE RAM FROM A FRIEND

SO I GOT 4GB DDR2 800MHZ

AND MY CORE IS 7022

THE BLOODY SAME

THIS ANNOYED ME

I NEED A CORE 2 DUO I THINK

MY EMULATORS RUN A BIT BETTER AFTER UPGRADING FROM MY GEFORCE 6500

BUT NOW I KNOW I NEED TO UPGRADE MY CPU

:P

Thanks for all the help...I think I'll definitely go with a dual core barebone kit...then add a card after I see how it performs if necessary.

One option is to get a motherboard with a decent onboard video card and an upgrade slot. Then you can try the emulators you are interested in to see if there's any problems with compatibility and/or performance. If so, you can add a video card when you get to it. Or, if you have unlimited funds, you can just get both at once. Either way works :D

yeah, that's exactly what I'm going to do...I think it has the nvidia 6100 gpu onboard and then I'll upgrade if necessary
