Hi,

Anyone know how to save your Hi-Score in MAME?

When I exit a game and then reload it my score is wiped out :(

You need to recompile MAME with the Hi-Score upgrade. It's available out there....

Go to this thread and follow it. Headkaze has the best GUI based compiler out there, and it's really easy.

Once you compile MAME, you have to turn the hi-score stuff on in the mame.ini AFAIK. Not all games work with the hi-score stuff. There is also a new project that is making the hi-score stuff much more useful as they are expanding the compatible games list rather quickly.

I might wait for the new project and see how that works

Waiting for the project has nothing to do with the Hi-Score being enabled. You're still going to have to compile MAME in order for it to work. The MAME Dev team wanted the all games to act exactly as they did back in the day. Many of the older games did not save the hi-scores, so if you turned off the machine, you lost the scores. Many machine did not save Hi-Scores until the mid-80's. So to emulate this, the Dev Team removed the capacity for MAME to save hi-scores unless the machine used NVRAM.

Games like Robotron use NVRAM files so they were capable of storing the scores, but games like Donkey Kong, Galaxian and all those loose the score as soon as you exit the game.

The HitoText project is more geared to displaying the hi-score info from the hi.dat files and NVRAM files, allowing you to view the high scores while inside of GameEx or other front ends. You have to recompile MAME in order for it all to work properly on the games that do not use NVRAM files.
