I wanted to get some peoples inputs on the version of mame they are running on their cabinets. I stopped updating mine awhile ago and its stayed at version .106 for well over a year. What all am I missing out on, other than a few games by not upgrading to the lastest version.

Running MAME 0.128u6. I would say maybe just missing out on some bug fixes and some more games. I guess the best thing to do is look at the release history and see what's new since the release you're currently using. That information can be found in the Previous Release section of the MAME site.

Thanks I'll take a look at that. I know my version doesn't support the video changes made to mame, but I can live with that.

Which version (singular)? I actually am currently running 3 versions. I use MAME Analog+ 0.90 for my rotary games (the last version that was released). I use MAME 0.117 for gun games (the last version that will support WinGun). I use Zinc and Model2 for Sony and Sega games. I use MAME 0.125 for everything else (just because I haven't gotten to updating in a few months).

There have been a lot of changes to MAME since 0.106, but there's not a ton that you would miss out on unless you have a high powered machine. I think the biggest thing is that the CPS3 games are now available.

I am running a seperate emulator for cps3 which I can still do shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I always upgrade on every new release but wait for different versions like 0.126, 0.127, 0.128 etc... I don't do the update packs till the next final version comes out.

I just run vanilla mame 0.115. I noticed the amount of space required for roms/chds just keeps on going up. I was considering removing the chds. What games would i be missing out on if i remove the chds then ?

:)

If you want to save some space, you should check out how many rhythm games have been released in the CHD's lately. I think by removing just those games from my cabinet, I cut the total MAME rom/CHD set in half!

There was some discussion about it a while back, but when we tried to incorporate into GameEx things got a bit sketchy. Turns out that the MAME Devs are not fans of that hack and suggested we not continue working on the project. I don't remember all the details, so perhaps someone that remembers better could fill in. Anyway, I think the resolution was that we were not to discuss it here. Maybe I'm wrong...

Yes that is correct. Its not exactly in the scope of gameex and we all respect the wishes of MameDev.

The main problem is the network code in Kaillera is closed source which means it breaks the Mame license agreement that all derivitive software must provide the full source.

BTW I tried an interesting experiment a while ago where I was attempting to add Kaillera support to vanilla Mame. That would mean it would not break any license because it would run external to Mame. I got it to work but the main problem was keeping the two versions of Mame perfectly syncronised. All I was doing was sending key input through the network but even on my 100 Mb/s network it would eventually get out of sync. I think I could get it to work but it would probably require a patched Mame (using a diff) so that I can keep the two games running perfectly in sync which means it must be synced per-cycle so that both games are processing input exactly the same way. That way it would not break the license and could be implemented into GameEx. Another issue though is hiding Kaillera since it has annoying dialog windows, so I would have to keep them hidden and enter the data in using messages. Bottom line it is possible IMHO but it would be better if the author of Kaillera just released his source code.
