Will GameEx ever support the newer version of ffdshow at all Tom?

What the heck .... dunno what just happened here as my post just repeated 3 times ....sorry.

Update: Thanks for deleting the other two post Tom :)

The main advantage is that it has a newer version of ffdshow and a whole bunch of other codecs for playing XVid, DivX, flv etc. The ffdshow on the GX website is very old.

BK,

Have you tried the Vista Codec Pack? It works great with GameEx and has the latest ffdshow with it. It works with XP as well. I recommend this pack now, but make sure you uninstall all your other codecs/packs before installing this.

I think your having a "Tempest" weekend! :P

Well I just tried the Vista Codec pack with XP and it didn't work had to resort back to old version of ffdshow.

When I ran GameEx all I got was a black screen and nothing happened!!

Had to reboot my computer and re-install old version of ffdshow and it works again.

I belive there is a setting you have to set in the Vista Codec pack. In the "ffdshow video decoder configuration" try setting Xvid codec to "Xvid" instead of "libavcodec". Also in the "XVid decoder settings" set "Compatibility Renderer" on. That should work. Works for me :)

You should uninstall all codecs including ffdshow and XVid/DivX codec before installing Vista Codecs (check in Add/Remove programs you don't have any codecs installed already). Don't install any other codecs.

What format are the videos your trying to play in GameEx?

If they are DivX you may need to run the following registry fix.

Just avi's and no I don't have any other codecs installed that I found. I uninstalled ffdshow before running the vista codec pack and set it up like you said and still had blank screen. Oh well I am not gonna mess with it anymore as it is working with the older version of ffdshow right now would of been nice to be with the most current version but oh well really don't feel like messing with it anymore at this point and time.

AVI's can be any codec. Open the video up in a hex editor and see if it has XVid or DivX in the header. I'd like to get to the bottom of this if you don't mind. Running that reg file might have solved the problem, did you try it?

Not have any luck with the Vista Codec Pack HK, those 2 settings where already set on mine when I installed it but it just locks up GameEx when it tries to play a video

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64

Also tried installing the x64 Components on the Vista Codec Pack site

PDS: What video format are you trying to play? I am playing back videos successfully in XP 64 with the Vista Codec pack. My avi's are XVid format.

I'm also using xvids, I can hear the sound just no picture

Try a few settings in the XVid config. Try turning off "Compatibility Renderer" then try changing "Output Colorspace" to RGB32. I'm sure it's just a simple setting.

P.S I can't stress this enough; make sure you don't have DivX or XVid codecs installed separately. Check in Add/Remove programs.

Dangit this is the 5th time I tried it and no it's not working !!! AGAIN .... So I ask until you I think the problem is that GameEx is looking for ffdshow.exe and the vista codec doesn't install ffdshow.exe as i searched my system and it is nowhere to be found?????

And YES I do not have DivX installed on my system.

GameEx doesn't search for ffdshow.exe. It uses DirectShow which will choose the codec based on the settings in the Vista Codec pack. The settings for the most part are in the ffdshow configuration (all found in Start->Programs->VistaCodecs). Ffdshow is a part of the Vista Codec Pack but it also installs other codecs like mov, flv and MPEG4. It's a codec pack meaning you should not have any other codecs installed.

It's strange that some people seem to have this pack working fine and others dont. I guess the failsafe recommendation is that old ffdshow pack. But it doesn't seem right to have to use such an old version.

It would help knowing if the video's your playing are either DivX or XVid. Download a program called CodecViewer and it will tell us. If they are DivX run the reg patch I posted. If they are XVid open the XVid configuration and try some different settings in there. Also try different settings in ffdshow configuration. If XVid doesn't work try the libavcodec. All I can do is give you the settings that are working for me, but you may need to try something else.

You continue to post saying "it's not working". Your not giving me any information about what videos your attempting to play. Your not verifying that you've checked Add/Remove programs. Your not saying what you've tried and what you haven't.

If all else fails until we can find out exactly why Vista Codec pack fails for some people then we will just have to go back to recommending the ancient version of ffdshow as we have in the past. Personally I'd like to figure out whats going wrong and solve it.

All I know it is an avi video. I'm done with it .... thanks for the help but I am not gonna mess with it no more since the old version works with out me having to configure anything. Until Tom somehow gets the latest ffdshow to work with GameEx I'm sticking with this one.

Not trying to sound like I don't appreciate your help as I do, I just want to install it and for it too work I don't want to mess around with configuring all these codecs as I don't have a clue as to what I am doing. The old ffdshow all I have to do is double click it installed and it works no configuring at all.

I understand, if it works it works no point in trying it for the sake of it. I must admit though I do like to get to the bottom of things and figure out _why_ things don't work. Quite often it's some simple setting causing the problem especially with codecs.

IMHO GameEx does work with the latest ffdshow it just needs to be configured right. Also ffdshow is a large codec pack with many different filters. It depends on what video format your trying to render.

Codecs are the No.1 PITA for FE developers, or any software that uses DirectShow. I don't know of any FE that doesn't have the same sort of problems with codecs.

Thought I'd spend some time trying to get to the bottom of this tonight but I'm beat :(

I've tried changing just about every setting I can find but they all end in the same result of GameEx freezing, all I've managed to work out is that GameEx doesn't actually freeze until it tries to turn the video display off e.g on the main screen I scroll down to last played option and I'll hear the video and see a black box if I then press right on my stick I can cycle through the the items in the top menu it's only once I select an option like 'Play random game' that doesn't have a video that GameEx freezes. Not that any of that's any use :)

I'm really not sure what else to try but if you can think of anything I don't mind flicking back and forth between the codecs to test it for you.

I've def all other codecs removed from add remove programs.

I've tried libavodec and xvid and just about every combination in the xvid settings and I've messed about with a few settings in ffdshow decoder section but all to no avail.
