That depends. If you get someone else's Mugen setup, then you don't have to mess with anything other than the controller setup. If you are starting from scratch, there's a lengthy learning curve that you will have to climb (unless you find some decent guides). I found that unless you are very careful with what characters and stages you use, you will end up with a mish mash of strange match ups. I have several setups that I found here and there, but none are currently installed in GameEx.

If you just have one version of Mugen installed, you can set it up as an emulator and check the "treat as a single pc game" option. That way it should just load the game when you load the emulator. I personally had a problem with it returning to the emulator game selection screen when I had it set up, but I didn't do too much trouble shooting to figure it out.

If you opt to install multiple versions of Mugen, you could create a Mugen emulator. That emulator would then point to a directory with .lnk files to each mugen exe. You would probably want a map file to give these games a nice name (or you could just give the .lnk file a nice name). It's really up to you and what you want though.

This really seems like a lot of work.

I did find a copy that has 614 Characters [Fighting/2001] but I don't think this is the actual program.

Where can I even get the Mugen install? I can not seem to find an offical site...

The Mugen community doesn't seem as open and giving as some other ones online. I didn't put a bunch of time in, but it looked like the people who spend the time to create the characters and stages tend to be interested in trading their work for other Mugen things. If you search around, you can find different Mugen setups that are already complete. I think I found several on P2P sites and various torrent trackers. They do tend to be large though. I think the ones I found were between 600Mb and 2Gb.

While these aren't typically tracked on the same torrent sites that you will find romsets, I can't list any of the locations I found because last I checked they did have some roms there. I don't know if it would break the rules, so I'll err on the side of caution and not list anything. They are common places though, so Google should help you out just fine.

I guess what I am trying to understand is does each player set or game set of Mugen become its own program. In other words, say I get a Mugen that has all MK players, does it run in it's own set and stages or does it mix with like say Homer Simpson?

Found this...

Do you think it is worth a try?

mugen game version 2002.04.14

sounds folder: 3 music files

stages folder: 3 stages (1 created by me)

chars folder: 2 chars

screenpacks folder: none

SETUP COMPILATION BY ME.

ZIP FILE COMPILED BY ME.

That one looks like it only has 2 characters installed and 3 stages. I wouldn't bother with it. There are sets that include hundreds of characters too. Those tend to be overwhelming to pick a player IMO. If you grab the official Mugen release and a character set, you will have to figure out how to set it up and get it looking good. It's definitely possible, but you would have to put in the effort. This is not a commercial, polished product, so it's not going to be via a GUI (there is a 3rd party one, but that's another story). You will be editing text files manually.

If it were me, I would just grab someone else's set that matches what you want. I personally never found exactly what I wanted, so I don't have it installed ATM. I wanted characters from the following:

Street Fighter

SNK

Marvel

Mortal Kombat

I wanted them broken up into blocks for each so they would be easy to find. I wanted just a few nicely put together stages. I wanted a few decent audio tracks. But I didn't want all variations of Ken. Just one version that was nice and representative of the series. It seemed to me like everyone that did a Mugen set was either all or none. This is really just my opinion though. If you want to give it a try, maybe you can find something better!

Ok but you really did not answer. Is everything a mish mash of characters or do you install seperate versions of the program to handle different character sets?

Posted

That's what I'm trying to say. There's no such thing as an installer or a version with/without x and y. If you get the official build of Mugen from the project's homepage, it includes NOTHING. You can search around and find characters, stages, etc., but you will have to install them manually by editing the ini files within the Mugen directory structure.

The other option is to find a setup that someone else has already tweaked and decided to share. There was a thread here a while back where one person gracefully shared his setup with the community. It was a nice small set that was pretty well balanced. If you search, there's a chance the files are still available.

It's up to you if you want to have a single version of Mugen that covers all characters or a few different ones that have specific sets. The beauty of Mugen is it's ability to be FULLY customizable. You can literally do anything you want with it. The only down side is that you must have a bit of talent if you are creating it from scratch.

Ok, I think I have located a few sets that come with the program. I will install one tonight to get a better idea.

I just wanted to be clear on the fact that you install several versions of the program, with different sets of characters.

I understand that everything can go into one install, but it seems like people have made sets of characters that cater to one install of the game so that you install several versions of the program to keep character sets divided.

Think I (sorta) said that right. =]

Posted

The only reason I would combine them into a single install is if I really wanted to have a 4 way with Popeye, Mario, Ken, and Sponge Bob. Seriously though, it just depends on your preference. I don't really have any desire to play anything outside of the realm I listed before (the big 4 fighting groups). There are a couple misc characters that wouldn't hurt, but I don't need every player ever developed. If I were going to have that type of install, it would be separate from one(s) that were more typically used.

Posted

So I installed this... I see what you are saying, some of the characters are really not matched well. The version I have has a bunch of characters in it but I would say 50% of them are junk.

Posted

I personally find it distracting when one character is super high-res and 3d while the other one is all blocky and poor quality. Also, you will find that each person that develops a character uses a different scale for the character strengths. As a result, Ken may be able to easily beat Wolverine with one set of characters, but with another it's a well matched fight.

If you want the best experience, you might be best suited to find a setup that was built from scratch by a single person. There are a few that I was able to find a while back. The only down side (sorta) is that the build is specific to what that person wanted and not necessarily what you want. It will also prove to be less upgradeable (well, unless you change everything...but that defeats the purpose now doesn't it).

Thank You, great post!

I will give some of these new ones a try. What I did do with the old one I had was weed out all the garbage. It took a lot of work to do it but it is now (more or less) done. What I have left is a great bunch of characters but the too problems I am running into now are as follows. Even when the game is on easy, some of the characters are VERY hard to play against! I am no stranger to fighting games and some of these characters are like non-stop special moves etc.. Is there anyway to correct the level of difficulty other than through the menu? Next the program crash from time to time but I think it has something to do with my sound setup; I am still looking into this.

Question...

In my select.cfg what does it mean when after some of the players names... Well here is an example:

Sakura, ,order=3

What does ",order=3" mean?

Also maybe you can help me with this...

I have Pocket Fighter characters in my Mugen but they are very hard to fight against with normal fighters. Is there away I can set Mugen so I never have to fight against them unless I am using another Pocket Fighter?

Posted

EVERYTHING is editable in MUGEN. I don't know how to do anything unfortunately, but if JCGamer is still with us, he can definitely point you in the right direction anyway.

JC... This is what I would like to be able to do, can you help me make this happen?

After looking over everything you provided here, can this be done?

I would like to use "Brokenmugen in HIres" but the only thing I would like to be different is the character select screen, I would like that to look like "mugen fighting jam in HIres".

I love the look of Broken but what the character select of Jam.

Thanks!

If I can't make this happen, I will just stick with Jam because I can sort move characters better in it.

I really like the look of Broken, everything about it is awesome... I just need more character slots and I like the layout of that screen on Jam. Too many for some but cool for me.
