I've been told this happens with 2.0.4xx of the .net framework and 2.0.50215 fixes it.

Can you confirm please, or if your not running version 2.0 let me know?

Cheers.

installed, rebooted with that version of .net but still exactly the same error :(

i'm using windows 2003 server sp1 (i use machine as my server with exchange as well as general htpc usage).

Sorry I think that was bogus info, or not the correct fix. Otherwsie what version of the .net Framework do you have. ie 1.0 or 1.1?

If you're running 2k3 server, make sure video acceleration is turned up. GameEx doesn't boot on my machine if acceleration is turned all the way to None, which is the default for Microsoft server OS's. You may have already changed that though since you use it for HTPC functions, but something to check.

Hi had the same error,

This is the procedure I did to fix it.

First, you must have framework 2

I had .net framework 2.0.4xxx, That was an old beta version, so I uninstalled it.

I installed to latest framework version 2.0.50215.

It work without even rebooting.

My config

Radeon 9600 XP

Windows XP SP2

Framework 2.0.50215

DirectX 9.0c

Unfortunatly that error really sheds no light to me. I have no idea why it can't load it.

I am thinking it must be some kind of dependancy that is required that you don't have, but I don't know what it is.

Could you try a reinstall of DirectX?

Anyone else have any ideas!?

Tom.

He probably can't reinstall DirectX. Once you have XP SP2, the DX installer does absolutely nothing, and I'm assuming the same is true of Windows Server SP1.

Did you compile PlayVideoBak.dll yourself, or is it an existing API? It has some downright strange dependencies listed if you open it with depends.exe. MSJAVA.DLL, WZCSVC.DLL (wifi config service) to name a couple. I don't have MSJAVA.DLL so I don't think it's an issue, just something odd.

I'm going to install GameEx 5 on our server 2003 as soon as my rooomie leaves. I'll see if I can duplicate the problem.

With depends.exe, I only get the following dependicies, which look pretty normal to me:

kernel32.dll

ntdll.dll

user32.exe

gdi32.dll

ole32.dll

advapi32.dll

rpcrt4.dll

msimg32.dll

I've tried tidying up the DLL a little (and yes Rob I compiled it myself, its something I've coded)

Can you try replacing the files in the attached zip and see if its any better?

Also Rob, what sort of dependencies do you get with this version?

Thanks,

Tom

still no luck :(

opening the file up in depends.exe shows a hella lot of associations.

one thing i noticed is that i dont have msjava.dll installed. but that shouldnt be a problem should it? you havent just randomly changed the language you have written it in to java have you?

how about posting the dll's from pre v5 (and maybe the exe) to see if i can get them working.

Ok here's what happened with my testing.

Installed GameEx. Copied my config. Tried to run. Failed to create fonts. I recognized that one - video acceleration was not turned up.

Turned up video acceleration. GameEx runs fine.

Installed the latest version of .NET framework 2.0

Bombs in exactly the same spot as thefunkygibbon's

Updated to the latest GameEx on my desktop PC. The same bomb now happens on my desktop, too. It wasn't a problem before, but now you really do have an app that's incompatible with 2.0!

*Edit* ... Argh, after re-reading avast's post, I realized I downloaded the wrong .NET version. Microsoft calls the new version "Beta 2" and has not updated their "Beta" site to point to the new download.

Here is the correct place to download 2.0 beta 2

*Edit* and now it's working again on my desktop...

I dont understand where these associations come from, I just get the ones listed above, can you post a few screen shots?

I am pretty sure the old versions will work, but they really are not so good, and not compatible anymore.

I think I have found the problem though, I dont seem to have any service pack installed for Visual Studio 6 C++. Stupid idiot I am or what.

Ill post back in a few once Ive checked this out.

Cheers.

Gibbon, uninstall Framework 2.0 ... and download new 2.0 from the link I posted above. Should fix the problem. You should also try leaving it uninstalled and seeing if it it will work with 1.1. You can have both 1.1 and 2.0 installed at the same time.

Yes, Tom, it works fine on both my systems now.

not sure if i was using 2 before or not. but

before v5.x it worked

after 5.x doesnt

5.x with .net 2 beta2 as per above links = no

5.x with .net 2 beta2 as per above removed (presume using 1.1) = no

looks like it may well be something other than .net then :(

Have you tried rebooting post uninstall?

Can you verify that the C:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.40607 is gone?

Tom, would definitely still try recompiling after installing the VC6 service pack. I lived through those, they made some VERY significant changes with regards to the standard headers and macros.

hmmm.

Although you said it worked before you installed 2.0?

Well I REinstalled Visual Studio 6 SP5 and Visual C++ is still not showing in Help -> About that its using a service pack. Is this normal? I am guessing it is.

Seems to be the Beta .net.

This Beta crap the companys are pulling (not just MS) is really starting to piss me off. Beta means not finished, it seems they put it out as shiny new, latest.

For the download for the .net 2.0 version theres no warning, such as this is Beta and all the warnings users used to get. What the f%£! is up with that!

Sorry for the rant! Although I expect the dictionaries will be adding to "Beta" in a few years. "Beta=Latest Innovation" Probably.

it worked on older versions, and i dont know what version of .net i was using then :( i only installed .net2beta2 after you suggested to. it allowed to install without whinging about it being installed already so one would assume that it wasnt installed already.

i'm in the process of reinstalling it. but i'll uninstall and reboot if it doesnt work still.

still no dice. dont have the folder with the version number in there any more either. if it makes any differnce the (same) error comes up a lot quicker now than when it did with .net2 installed.

Either some component of 2.0 beta 1 is not uninstalling properly on your system, or 2.0 beta 1 is a way to consistently reproduce an unrelated issue.

Version 4 also worked fine on my 2.0 beta 1 system.
