We had a spammer posting porn all over the forum. I along with another was able to clean it up (not sure who else was helping) But some of these threads were viewed a few times. Please guys use the report button so we can get these befre it gets out of control.

And to elugheddy. Your IP has been logged and we will report you to your ISP.

It was me who helped out, and thanks for your help.

We did get a few reports. I actually think the spam is automated though. I upgraded the forum to the latest version last week, and since then weve have about 3-4 different users posting spam. Like I said though I think its automated.

I caught a glimpse of this last night. They spammed all the Spesoft Forums! Dang spammers! :angry:

They're not hackers, basically what these guys do is use software to scan the web (probably using keywords and results from Google) then look for signatures in the url's like "forums/index.php" and then use known ways to auto register on the forum and spam.

The best way to prevent these sort of attacks is to make people enter words that are randomly generated into an image when they register. This makes it practically impossible to automate the registration process. It works well although I hate those systems when I can't even read the text they generate.

I believe alot of this is to just improve their position in Google search results, as the more places linked to your website then it's considered by Google's rating system to be more popular. So this is really a form of spamming to improve search engine rankings.

I'm sure you guys know this... Most sites have a button to choose new letters if you can't read the existing ones. I have also seen sites that would read them out loud to you. You could also go to the system that e-mails a password to you to join.

If it keeps up, I hope you do something, because my "report finger" is getting sore, which is a problem, because that finger has other uses!

Update:

Im doing whatever I can, and thanks for everyones help.

Invision (the makers of the forum software) released a patch, and I applied this a couple of days ago. This helped but obviously there is still some problem. According to Invision the issue is affecting thousands of boards across the net right now. Obviously the Spesoft Forums are substantial enough to attract spammers. Invision is releasing a new version of the board anytime now, and this will use http://recaptcha.net/

Once the new version is released we will upgrade.

So its not being ignored.

I can hardly read the captcha's as is either. I often get them wrong, and Im not even middle aged yet!

EDIT: Just for your info, the forums do already use a Captcha system, and have from day one.

Update:

The new forum version has been released (last night actually), and I've put in the request for the upgrade (cant do it myself as I use a hosted solution).

Not sure how long it will take, so hang on.

I dont want to kill your buzz, but I deffinitly dont see it that way. If it wasnt for people like Brian and all the others giving up there valuable and precious time, and it is valuable and precious time that they could be otherwsie spending with there families or earning a living, then GameEx would probably be at about version 5.02 or there would literally be very little support.

I know you were joking but I feel I had to say something. Dont underestimate what the community brings to the product. Because I don't.
