Hi everyone

I'm trying to build my media center with the best of my favorite emulator. But I'm not sure which set I should go with...

There's the TOSEC edition, the No-Intro and the GOOD... I'm asking your opinion on the matter... (Since I'm having a hard time making up my mind).

Thanks in advance,

Yves

in my experience, Goodtool offers perhaps the best overall sets. Then No-into, and lastly Tosec.

Lot's of people use Tosec and it is great for most systems (including iso's), but is totally missing from some systems and some dats contain less than 10 games.

I personally use either Goodtool or No-Intro. Between the two you should be able to cover everything.

One point, neither of three contain all games for a single system. Some will have less than others.

You can't really answer the question unless you say what the difference is though. Each set has it's own goal and thus results in a different set of roms.

Goodtool sets are intended to be the be-all end-all set. They try to have every single game and every version in the set. So as a result you will end up with 20 versions of super mario (USA, JAP, EUR, USA Hacked version 1, JAP Alternate ending version 1, .......). The set will be structured so that each game has all versions of the roms zipped together. GameEx can handle this and will list each one for you when you select that game (if you are a registered user).

NoIntro sets are designed to be a no-bull set. They include only the "best" official release of each game. I think they still include the different regions in the set so you will have USA, JAP, EUR, WORLD, etc, but it will not include the hack were Mario looks like Barney ;).

TOSEC is similar to NoIntro AFAIK, except they include other systems that used optical media as well. For newer consoles (Dreamcast, PSX, etc), TOSEC is the only way you are going to find all roms together. I don't think the other sets do these much larger collections, so TOSEC is the only game in town.

But, like Flash said, you won't be able to find all consoles released from all 3. As a result, you will end up with a mixed and matched collection either way. Since I'm not familiar with TOSEC, I can't comment on where it would fall in my priorities accurately. As a result, my order of preference would be:

1) NoIntro

2) GoodTools

3) TOSEC

I do agree for the most part, though no-intro does miss out by not having dats for a number of systems (Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Intellivision, PC-FX, Neogeo, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 400/800, Atari ST, Sinclair Spectrum, amongst others)

Goodtool may have all the hacks and versions, but it does cover a lot more systems. Tosec is good only for cd based systems imho.

Thanks for those great answers!

"I can see clearly now!" :P

Seriously, I will go first with the no-intro if available then the GoodSet and last resort the TOSEC.

So

1. No-Into

2. GoodSet

3. TOSEC

Or I may go for all three as well since disk space is not much of an issue nowadays.

Thanks again, best forum I've been on, and the best front-end for emulators.

Goodbase64 is not too bad "<name of game> (number)". I have been using this mostly while doing vidsnaps for the c64 to cover every game. I then use a (under-construction) DB to rename the roms to display the full corrected names when in GameEx - though just removing the bracketted text is fine for rom display. The only problem with goodbase64 is that the dat is only v3 (not the current v5 set) so I am adding the missing ones to the c64 DB as I go along.

So... Gamebase64 is the best option of the bunch for commodore 64 imho.

Going even more off-topic... Did you see that a certain (Purely Delightful  ) site is offering downloads of Compute! Gazette, and Run magazines? I thought of you, because you are such a fan...You probably have them all in your attic...
