There are certain games that even though I configure under Zinc that donâ??t seem to work. Well I mean they load but say for instance Mr. Driller, I try to add credits with the credit button but none register. Other games seem to play fine but for some reason, certain games itâ??s like the controls are not even set for them, all in Zinc.

Ideas?

Hello.

I'm not sure if it's a related problem, but I'm also having issues with some Zinc games. The one that comes to mind is Strider 2. I have the complete MAME .127 romset, and I've also built a complete Zinc romset using the 1.1 dat in CLRMamePro which resides in the "roms" directory inside the zinc directory.

Most other Zinc games work fine from GameEx, but when I try to run Strider 2, it just dumps me back to the GameEx screen (ie, doesn't even run it in MAME from GameEx). I've confirmed that the ROM is fine by running it in Zinc via the commandline.

Any ideas?

Did you check the zinc log file? It will give you the command that you used and the resulting error if it doesn't run. I think you have to turn the log file on before it will show up though. If not, you might get the same error message from simply running the same command from the command line that GameEx sends. Check the "Run Last Game.bat" file in the GameEx Start folder to get the exact command GameEx is using.

I think the issue is with recent versions of MAME, GameEx shows PSX based games in the list, that arnt supported by Zinc.

For example it shows the USA version of Strider 2 but only the Japanese version works in Zinc.

Well I know in HyperSpin it loads Mr. Driller in Mame but in Game Ex, it loads Mr. Driller in Zinc. Is there anyway to tell Game Ex what version to load in what program?

There isn't any way to dictate which you want it to load in. Since Zinc is always faster than MAME, it's assumed that if Zinc supports the game, you want to play it there. If it's not supported, then it's assumed you want it in MAME. Same goes for Model2 compatible games. There is no override other than turning off Zinc support.

There's currently no way to pick and choose what games you play in Zinc or MAME. You can do one of a few things.

1) Play all games in MAME.

2) Play all Zinc compatible games in Zinc.

3) Set up a separate emulator for Zinc and don't run Zinc compatible games in MAME.

4) Set up MultiMAME to play any game you want exactly how you want it to be run.

5) Set up MAME_Loader to use Zinc for only specific games and disable GameEx's built-in Zinc support.

There is no option available to select what game you want to play where on an individual basis through the configuration of GameEx. This will have to be a bit of a hack.

To complete my hijack (my apologies)...

Thanks Tom. That was exactly the problem. In my Mame rom folder, I replaced the Strider 2 rom with the version built with the Zinc DATfile, and it worked perfectly.

Here is a tutorial on Zinc http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=85315.0

At the end I have posted a link to Zinc Front End which helps to set up controls. I would guess you don't have your inputs setup correctly.

I did use that program for setting up Zinc, maybe I missed something? I would say well over half my games control just fine but there are a few that do not. It's hard for me to understand when a coin button is sat, how it could change when using another rom under the same program...???

In any case, I will verify my settings again tonight as I may have missed something...

I took the time to look at this again last night... Its almost like I feel I need to take a video and post it of what is going on because I just don't get it!

All the buttons are setup and sat correctly using the Zinc front end software, I still can't get Mr. Driller to work. When I press the button to add a coin, it does nothing... So I started hitting buttons and it turn out I or J inserted coins, I don't remeber the exact key right this second. At anyrate, I don't get it because that is not the key sat in Zinc to add coins using that front end software... The correct key is Num 1.

I am going to have to read that link again and try and manualy go in an edit whatever may need to be done. :(

When you setup your controls using the zincfe, did you do it individually for every single game and save as you went? It took me a while but once I went through every game and set them all to use mame's default key mappings, they all started working for me. Including Mr. Driller (the #1 reason to use zinc!) Don't just check and set it for 1 game. They all have to be done on a game by game basis.

Maybe all this is not needed or I should just ask this, can anyone add coins to Mr. Driller in Zinc because that is the real problem here...

I just tested for you and I am able to add coins to Mr. Driller. I wasn't able to at first but I tried different things and this is what I came up with. Download a copy of the Winterblast Input Plugin from here and replace your current controller.znc and controller.cfg files. Then give it a go. ;)

No problem. I hope it's the solution cuz since no one actually did tell you if they were able to test Mr. Driller and verify that it would accept coins, I thought I'd verify for you. And after some tweaking.... Whooohoooo! Fixed it! So let me know in the forum or hit me up in IM to let me know.
