Widescreen TFT, MAME, and aspect ratio

I have set mame to auto display correct aspect ratio, and I have set to enforce it. However, horizontals still fill the whole screen (such as SF2). In fact, I think all horizontals fill the screen. Surely there should be some borders down either side like for vertical games?

It doesn't look stretched, in fact it looks superb, but I am wondering is it really displaying in its true aspect ratio?

If not, is there a way to do it for all?

By default it will maintain aspect ratio, unless you use the switch -nokeepaspect or -noka.

Here you can read to understand (taken from windows.txt in the docs directory of your MAME directory:

-[no]keepaspect / -[no]ka

Enables aspect ratio enforcement. When this option is on, the game's

proper aspect ratio (generally 4:3 or 3:4) is enforced, so you get the

game looking like it should. When running in a window with this option

on, you can only resize the window to the proper aspect ratio, unless

you are holding down the CONTROL key. By turning the option off, the

aspect ratio is allowed to float. In full screen mode, this means that

all games will stretch to the full screen size (even vertical games).

In window mode, it means that you can freely resize the window without

any constraints. The default is ON (-keepaspect).

I have selected and enforced the aspect ratio, which, incidentally, is set to AUTO.

Vertical games are definitely maintaining their correct aspect ratio and are not stretching. However, I'm not so sure with horizontal because they are filling the screen.

They don't look stretched or distorted but I AM using a widescreen and so I would have assumed most of the horizontal games would have bars down either side because arcade games did not play through a widescreen monitor.

I'm certain the games are filling the screen and not actually playing at their correct aspect.

I don't have a widescreen to verify but maybe the switch -nohwstretch is what you're talking about. So yes, vertical games will maintain ratio but on a horizontal game, they will stretch and fill the screen.

I use the graphic drivers built in scaler

I use the resolution 1280x960 for all emus and i get black borders on the side (using 1080p res on my htpc)

The output resolution will be 1920x1080 but with black borders on the side if you choose 1280x960 for the game etc
