Hi all,

So do I just need to do the following:

Download and install MAME and get all the goodies and games etc.

Download and install GameEx which will then run with MAME, problem solved?

And that will have me running a virtual arcade machine basically? Is GameEx an online only program or something? Does it cost?

Something else I also want to do is have an N64 Emulator (Project64) and to be able to play Goldeneye on the original N64 controller pads. There is a USB converter I can get hold of, so will this work through gameex too?

Welcome to the forums. Your questions are pretty basic and sound like you found the forum before you found the main web page.

http://www.gameex.net/

There's a bunch of info there that would be a good primer for using GameEx. Once you've checked it out, come back and ask any questions you still have! Also, there is a FAQ sticky at the top of the forum that contains tons of info about basic problems and solutions once you do get going.

Have fun! :D

Just as an FYI that is covered on the main site as well. You are not required to purchase GameEx for it to work. With the unregistered version, you get about 99% of the features as the registered version. The main difference you will notice is the nag screen. If you can live with it being displayed for ~10 seconds, you don't have to. Most of us do register because we believe in the project and want to pay for a couple beers for Tom (the author). He does enough that he deserves one every now and again!

I heard about a NAG screen and that payment wasn't that much at all.. I guess it's just a reminder to upgrade to the full version?

Is the full version transferable between PC's or is it locked to each computer/installation?

I'm having difficulty understanding how to install MAME, so will concentrate on that first, zip with a zip and no installation files (such as a basic setup.exe) :(

Thanks for the repsonses guys

MAME is easy to install and get running, but it takes a while to get it exactly right (configure controls, video settings, etc.). Basically, you get the exe from http://mamedev.org/release.html. Then, unzip the archive to a directory (c:\emu\MAME for example). Put your roms in the rom directory (don't ask, we don't know where to get them and won't help in any way with obtaining them...see the rules). Make sure you can run games from the command line (e.g., "mame.exe 1941" would launch 1941 in MAME).

Next, install GameEx and run the setup utility (setup wizard or advanced config tool) and put in the correct paths. Good to go!

Well, that's overly simplified, but you get the basic idea. Once you have that going, there's tons of other stuff that can be done. Enjoy!
