MAME: Asteroids controls remaining default??

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've changed all my controls under Input (General), but for some reason Asteroids remains default mame controls. Why is this?

Is it because its vector and does this mean I have to manually change every vector game?

Ta :P

Check your mame ini directory for either Vector.ini or Asteroids.ini and delete. Per system/game ini's take precedent over default.ini

If you launch the game and go to the controls (hit tab and navigate to the game's controls), you will see everything that can be set for that game. If you have no game specific .cfg file (or apparently a system .cfg like vector, neogeo, etc.), then everything should show up as you have it set in your default.cfg. If you have anything that is different from what's in the default.cfg, those items will show up with a high lighted background. If you want to set things back to default, go to the control and hit select (enter by default) then ui cancel (escape by default). If it doesn't go back to default, try again (it cycles through sometimes).

You can also do what greatflash suggested, but this way doesn't require you to drop out to your OS if you are on a cabinet. Just another way to get the same results. Have fun!

Hi, I don't see any vector.ini. Am I supposed to create one?

The file would be called cfg\asteroid.cfg in your Mame folder. Delete that.

oops, I said .ini, thats what happens when you answere at work with no way of checking, and also cause i'm not one of the smarta$$'s i keep hearing about :)

Ok I'm confused now.

What file am I looking for, where is it located, and what am I doing with it?

Thanks

In your mame directory, you have several sub directories that contain game specific settings. One of those is 'cfg' which contains the settings for inputs among other things. When you launch a game for the first time (e.g., asteroids), mame will create a file in that directory with the .cfg extension (e.g., asteroids.cfg). If you don't adjust any of the settings for inputs for that game, the file will be mostly empty. In that case, the settings that will be used for inputs will come from the default inputs (stored in default.cfg). If you get everything screwed up and just want to start over, you can always delete the .cfg file for a specific game, the default config, or everything just by deleting the appropriate files in the cfg directory.

In this case, you want to start from scratch on Asteroids, so go to the cfg directory and delete asteroids.cfg. If you still have problems, go back to the cfg directory and delete both asteroids.cfg and default.cfg. Be aware that if you do this, you will need to set up your default controls again.

Hopefully this description will be enough detail to help. If not, just ask for more specifics and either myself or someone else can fill in what's missing. Good luck!

Hi there. I did everything you advised and the key mapping for vector games still doesn't change. They stay at CTRL, ALT, SPACE etc

Please help :(

Did you find a file called Vector.cfg? , if so - delete it!

Did you ever check to make sure that your files aren't write protected? right-click on your mame folder, and make sure read-only isn't checked. If it asks you if you want to apply to all folders, and files, say yes.

If you already did it, let me know so I can sleep better tonight....

Hi Tempest. I just unchecked read-only and I still cannot see any vector cfg file :(

I also did a Search for a file names vector within the mame folder and nothing came up, so why aren't my vector games getting remapped?

now i'm confused.

What tempest meant was that asteroid.cfg or default.cfg may be write protected so that when you change them the changes are not saved.

find each one and right click/properties and make sure that write protect is not ticked.

and then try to change the controls again in Mame to see if it works....

It doesn't make any difference.

I'm wondering if I have not explained the problem properly and have given you the wrong idea. The keys have mapped perfectly in the Input General section - every game has the keys mapped as I want them, except for vector games (which is usually Player 1 Button 1, Player 1 Button 2, Player 1 Button 3, Player 1 Button 4 etc). They just seem to stay as default.

Maybe we are supposed to go in there and map the keys for every vector game manually?

Am I the only one with this problem?

you used to be able to do them all as a whole.

You can change the parent rom and this will alter all clones (unless you change a clone)

In earlier Mame builds, im sure there was a way to modify all vector controls as a whole using a vector.ini file in the ini dir. I don't think that is possible now, not sure if it will work by setting up the controls for asteroids and then renaming asteroid.cfg to vector.cfg.

I really cant be more help than that. :(
