Firstly, thanks for a terrific piece of software. My Cocktail cabinet used to be running a stripped down ubuntu install. But i was having problems getting suspending to work so i went to XP. And found GameEx. Terrific piece of kit thanks.

I noticed that MAME, Gens and any other emulator when launched from GameEx crashes when the player 1 joystick is in the Up+Left position. This equates to keys 2+4 on a keyboard.

I have scoured the config files for something that could be causing this action as the emulators work brilliantly alone.

Any help will be VERY appreciated and concrete my decision to dropping a few pounds to get rid of the nag screens!!

Thanks

First things first. If you have a problem with GameEx itself crashing, post your log file.

Now, it sounds like this is actually an emulator problem, but I'm not sure. If emulators crash when run from GameEx, can you verify that they also crash when run independently? The best way to check is to use the "Run Last Game.bat" file in the GameEx start menu. Also, you apparently have your joystick mapped to 2 and 4 number keys for some reason. That's not typical, but I don't think it's a problem. Can you verify that pressing 2 + 4 (on the keyboard, not the joystick) crashes things?

If you do the legwork, we can help provide suggestions. In the end, we'll get it running for ya!

In the emulators it works fine, i can mash the joysticks to my hearts content and all the mappings are perfect.

GameEx remains running in the background, no crashing. So basically i am able to run the game up again straight away with no problems. Other than it quitting the next time the conditions are met.

Once i knew it was something down to GameEx i went and changed all the MAME options in GameEx to be as basic and like the raw command line as possible. The problem still occurs.

If i unplug the arcade controls and use a normal wired usb keyboard, the problem still occurs.

I guess I'm confused what the problem is then. Maybe it's not really a problem...

GameEx has the ability to quit a game via a game pad combination. This is useful if you use one or more game pads to play your games and you don't have a button or don't want to dedicate a button to quit. The default combination is (as I recall) Up + Left + Buttons 1-3. If this is turned on in the advanced config for the emulator, then holding the combination for a couple seconds will exit. This isn't a "crash", it's a designed in feature. I don't know that this is what's going on, I'm just guessing with the details I'm seeing. I think this is an option in GameEx for MAME as well, but I'm not sure where to adjust it.

This sounds exactly like the problem i am having. I have been looking through the advanced configuration for something like that almost all day. But i can't find any options like it.

Anyone happen to know where abouts the options are?

Thanks guys

It's not in the setup programs, it's only in the Advanced Emulator configuration files. Each emulator can have an advanced config (or you can use the same config for all of them). If you look near the bottom of these files, you will see "combo exit". You can enable/disable it here and set the keys by putting 'true' after the key.

I have scoured all the files in that dir and havn't found 'combo exit' anywhere. I have however fixed the problem by pysically moving the buttons so they are opposite on the joystick. I remapped all the controls and its nolonger a problem.

Im pretty lost, however mame is working fine, just need to find out why the MapKeys doesn't work for gens!

Cheers
