Did you search for CPWizard on the forum? There's TONS of info about setting it up. I don't think there's a single comprehensive guide available. Also, check out HK's CPWizard homepage. It's got a lot of info there.

Hi. I've read loads of posts and the help section in CPW, but i'm still stuck.

I've set up CPW in the GameEX advanced config, but whenever I play a game (mame) and press P, it pauses then a few seconds later the CPW panel appears - its the default one and not the one I created, and then when I click P again, nothing happens and I have to press escape, and then I have to press P again to unpause.

Just seems a bit wrong.

1. i need to be able to view my own panel I created so why am I viewing the default one

2. is there a smoother way to view the controls? prssing P, Esc, P again seems wrong, plus it sometimes crashes GameEX.

Thanks

Also, when I export to image, i load my CP up, but as soon as I hit GO!, it loads up the default one and sends all images based on that.

dont know what im doin wrong

HK or another user would be better to answer this, but I'll give it a shot. You need to change the settings so that the panel you designed is used instead of the default one. The default for MAME is named mame.xml. If you want to use a different one, just change the setting to yours (clair.xml). Alternately, you can delete the default one and rename yours to mame.xml, but if you do that be sure to make a backup. When you install a new version of CPWizard, it will overwrite your custom one.

Also, some guy did a help file for CPWizard awhile back... click on help, (and then help again), and check to see you have everything set up correctly. It will only take a couple of minutes, it sound like you have all of the hard part done.

Let us know if you get it working, or if you need more help....

I forgot about that. Yeah, someone did put together a nice FAQ for CPWizard. As I recall, is effort helped clean up a lot of little things about CPWizard in the process.

Thanks guys. I seem to have cracked this now.

When I load gameex and select a mame game, then press P, after a second or so my control panel pops up with the correct button config. IT'S GREAT...

However!:

When I hit P again then CP disappears but the game is still paused, so I hit P a third time and it then unpauses. So far so good, HOWEVER:

When I then need another reminder and want to see my buttons again, and so hit P, my controls pop up again however when I hit P again to remove them, the game crashes and goes back to menu.

What am I doing wrong guys?

You can change what buttons you have assigned to functions in CPWizard. As I recall, there's a back button that can be set to quit. I have back set as button 2 on my cab (the same as I use to cancel in GameEx), so when I hit that, it exits CPWizard. MAME is still paused, but just unpausing works fine. I haven't experienced any crashes with it.

Hi guys. I've changed the exit key to Backspace, however the problem persists. Whenever I load the CP wizard panel up for a second time, it ALWAYS crashes when i try to exit it.

The log file is in C:\Program Files\CPWizard. I don't know if there's a subdirectory there or not, but it's called log.txt as I recall. Also, you may want to turn on the "verbose logging" first as it might provide a bit more detail to run down the problem.

No log.txt. Nothing. Also turned on verbose logging.

The log file is called CPWizard.log and is located in the CPWizard folder. It's not called log.txt.

With your screenshot, you have not set the the label groups correctly if you are trying to have the Kick and Punch words appearing in the label group. Either delete the label groups or set them up correctly.

Label groups take common words in a group and place them in a separate label.

So say you have three labels in Group1, Label1, Label2 and Label3

Say the Label1, Label2 and Label3 labels have Short Kick, Strong Kick and Roundhouse Kick respectively. Then it will place Kick in the Group1 label and set Label1, 2 and 3 to Short, Kick and Roundhouse.

If you don't have the groups set up correctly they won't work right which is what it looks like has happened in your screenshot.

Thanks for the explanation on groups HK! I didn't really understand what the point was, and now I do. I don't know if I'll set any up, but it's good to know what they are there for.

Hi, just wondered if anyone could help me with this?

Summary - when I pause mame, the CP pops up with the controls, then I hit back, and unpause mame. But the second time I do it. hitting Back causes the game to exit.
