hey,

yesterday we had a karaoke party and i found out that i really have a weird collection on my machine.

so i decided to update the database of cdg's to the best i can find... i guess sunfly is the way to go!

now basically everything from sunfly i found so far follows the sunfly naming convention which is not very cabinet friendly (like sf42303 Michael Jackson - Don't cry for me Argentina.cdg).

do you guys know if there is a dat file to rename the songs to get an alphabetical order (like artist - song) or do you have any other suggestions? how did you do it?

If the names follow a standard, then you could always use a script (Python would be easy for this as an example) to rename the files for you. If you need the original names for some reason, you could opt to create a SymLink to the file and rename it to the desired name with this process. In Python, this is probably a 5-10 line program depending on the complexity of the naming scheme.

Yeah I would leave name alone. It might not be friendly in GameEx but it's usually the standard naming convention for all karaoke. I don't use GameEx for my karaoke so many programs read this format. It's all really up to you. But as bkenobi said you could always rename all your files. The reason I keep mine intact is for my karaoke book.

Sunfly is good, also Legends, DKKaraoke, Sound Choice, and I also like Monster Hits. It really depends on your choice of music. There are also many other collections out there but these are the ones I find I use most.

I also remember messing with one of the files that GameEx creates. Was either KaraokeData.dat or KaraokeFiles.dat in the DATA directory of GameEx. Don't recall which one as it still didn't give me the results I wanted but once it generates the name of your songs then you can go in there and change them and it will list the way you want. Just a thought.

thank you for the info. i didn't know about the other packs... sound choice i can find quite a lot for!

i guess i'll just rename everything once and then keep it as it is.

just two more short questions... all the files are packed as zips. so far, i had the mp3 and cdg file unpacked. will gameex support zipped files as well?

what mass renaming tool would you prefer? so far i'm using joe, but it has some limitations (e.g. can't find an option to crop off a certain amount of letters from the beginning of a file)

GameEx doesn't play zips but Media Player does with the known karaoke plugin. I keep mine zipped personally. Again it's preference so that's up to you. Maybe Tom can add zip as an extension since it does play inside Windows Media Player. As far as renaming there's lots of tools out there. The one I use is made specifically for Karaoke called KJ File Manager. It's a great tool if you're gonna start managing your karaoke collection. Mine is pretty huge so I use all these karaoke tools and many others for playing and creating my song books. I've tried many karaoke programs cuz was heavily into there for awhile cuz of the ex-girlfriend. So if you have any questions then don't hesitate to ask.

let's hope tom will add this feature in the future! sorry to hear she's now your ex girlfriend... seemed like you put a lot of effort into building her a nice karaoke collection.

I hope you found another girl to sing with ;) my girlfriend is not into karaoke at all :(

LOL. It's all good. I at least got the collection out of it. LOL. Karaoke is fun so would be great if we can get Tom to add this feature. I've brought it up before. Perhaps should post in request feature topic. Also would be good to handle subfolders just like videos and pictures does cuz have mine sorted by collection and then of course the disk itself. Have way too many to put in just one folder. Well good luck with what you're trying to accomplish. :P . It's one of those things I got into and couldn't stop as we all do with emulation.

i know what you mean! i got into collecting roms of the games I played as a kid when i started visiting zophar's domain regularly in 1999 and now i'm quite happy with what i collected. now karaoke is the next big thing :)

i got one more question for you: do you know if theres any way to let the text appear nicer?

i wish i would have fonts that i could choose and that don't look distorted. i don't expect gameex to have support for that but i imagine there being a program which extracts the cdg data and let's the user customize its appearance. or is the format proprietary?

btw kj file manager is exactly what i was looking for. i love the export and convert function! that will make the re-organisation very easy!

As far as the text I'm not aware of the font being able to be changed. I know there are some players out there that have filters that make them appear nicer. My preferred karaoke player is called Swift Elite. However I could be wrong and there might be a way do to do this. Just never looked into this before. Sorry couldn't be much help on that one.
