Hunk_4TH Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Uh Oh! Tom's off on one.... I'm not sure if one is being worked on but I think we can use a Naomi database now Quote
Tom Speirs Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Very kind of you to offer Hunk. Good luck. Quote
Hunk_4TH Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Very kind of you to offer Hunk. Good luck. Thank you Tom! I'd love to work on one to be honest. Does it take a lot of work to work on something like this? Quote
Tom Speirs Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Thank you Tom! I'd love to work on one to be honest. Does it take a lot of work to work on something like this?GameEx will create a MAME database after a list update, so thats probably the best way to go with this. Turn off all filters and update the list, then youll just have to delete the data not needed and add a little bit of missing data. Quote
greatflash Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Thank you Tom! I'd love to work on one to be honest. Does it take a lot of work to work on something like this?It would be quite quick and fairly easy to do. The number of working games is a definate plus. I may be tempted to knock one up tomorrow..... See what time I have. Quote
greatflash Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 I'm not saying this because it's too much work for me, I'm saying it's alot of work for whomever is doing the data entry. Right now the only person doing it is Flash. It's already alot of work scraping, updating and organising data from existing databases online, let alone starting them from scratch. I also question what data we could use already. I don't think we can use 90% of the data we have, create an online database that competes with other commercial websites without expecting trouble down the line. Also I think MAWS already does a pretty good job of an online database for Mame which includes all the various info and images.I agree with both sides of the arguement (discussion). I like the idea in theory. The databases could be used without the descriptions as a starting point in the same way wikipedia started as a page with one entry called "Wikipedia". All the data could just start as a database of Title, ystem, publisher, year, etc. These could easily be linked with graphics from Emumovies and use some really great artwork for the system (ahem! ). I am quite happy to play with this - mainly as it does not involve extra work from me as such I see no reason to take some COMPLETE db's (Saturn. Dreamcase, Colecovision, Intellivision - for a start) and just see how it works. Tom, you may find it impractical once you start work on it - who knows? But do bear in mind there are benefits long term. Example is for the Saturn - 220 or so games, GameExBD 690. I have not been able to find a single site that contains the complete list for a system (so far). anyway - that is my three-hapenny worth. Off too bed now! Poor tired flash. I will catch up with this in the morning - goodnight all! Quote

Once the application is coded, and bug fixed, all I plan on doing is rebooting the server, and approving updates, users and moderators. Quote

Once the application is coded, and bug fixed, all I plan on doing is rebooting the server, and approving updates, users and moderators.Sounds fine to me. It would make a great starting point, and who knows where it could progress with user input. Mind you - people are getting quite lazy lately. Look at some of the other databases and how enpty they are I would certainly like to see it develop. Quote
greatflash Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 After a request by Hunk_4TH and because of all the interest in the system of late, I decided to create a Naomi DB.The db contains 71 games of both GD-Rom and chip based seeing as all emu's will support both. The naming convention in the 3 dat columns should match ok with known dumps and I have filled all of them to aid matching with any dumps that are released after the db's release.Have not tried it yet as have not had time to set up Naomi emu in gameex (I wonder why I never have time ).Added Biography THIS time HK Cheers!_Arcade__Sega_Naomi_v1.01__Flash_.zip Quote

headkaze Posted October 9, 2008 Author Posted October 9, 2008 Sweet thanks! Looks lik eit needs a password to unrar though Thats because your not supposed to download them from here. We have a system in place so the database will end up being on the GX website for download with all the others Quote

greatflash Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 Oh my bad dude I didn't know Thanks!Yep, sorry Hunk (snigger), but the way it works it that the DB is created and then uploaded here as an XML file for HK to audit. The XML file is then converted to a MDB file for inclusion in the DB repostory for download. It won't be long When you do have it, please let me know how you get on with the matching, The naming is based on the currently available dumps, not IMBERZERK renames :)Cheers. greatflash Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 HK:Here is an updated Atari 7800 db. This contains filled Developer fields. It is something that tom would like to add as a new feature to compliment the "Also On" addition I belive. The problem is that I still need some way to colate "Database Name", "Develper", and "Publisher" across all db's. I know this is a real chore and really am sorry for asking. You have done such great work on the project already, but as with children - they never stop growing! I need a way to check naming across all db's, and a way of editing them "Batch", this is quite important for Tom for other reasons and important for me too, the db's are like my children and I want them all to grow up perfect, well mannered, and to understand correct syntax and a common language lol. Also, any chance of a drop down box for the "Developer" field in the edit box?I do honestly believe this will really be the last request of all - honest. How to implement it the best - i have no idea? Perhaps right-clicking a column in the rom list and selecting "Cross-check" in a pull down would be a great way to implement it? then what?Anyway, it would really help and you know if there was a paypal button with HK on it, it would be done - but then again, your work is priceless! _Console__Atari_7800_v1.012__Flash_.zip Quote
Hunk_4TH Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 I tried the Naomi DB but it looks like I'm not getting anything unless I'm doing something wrong I'm sure it's something to do with my dumps I'm not really sure which dumps they are. Quote
greatflash Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 I tried the Naomi DB but it looks like I'm not getting anything unless I'm doing something wrong I'm sure it's something to do with my dumps I'm not really sure which dumps they are.I have used 2 different dump names. These rely on retaining the orignal archive names and not extracted files and a lst file. Keep them in the archive. If you find that some match and some don't - please pm me the FULL names of the archives that fail to match. The Naomi db is a tricky one to do as there are no set names for the archives as yet. I have chose not to use the mame names as these are handled by mame itself and used the names of the original scene releases. There is space to add one other name to each of the rom/gd names so this can be done. Though this should not need to be done if the archives are intact.I advise keeping the archives together and using GameEx's zip support.EDIT: Just a thought, are all your roms archives of 8 letters. If they are mame formatted and others are using these, perhaps I should add these to the db after all?If you can send a list of filenames and gamenames via pm, then I will add them if this is the case...All I can say is they all work for me Quote
headkaze Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 Flash: You said you wanted a combobox for the publisher field, but when you press on the "..." button you have a list of publishers to choose from anyway? As I said in PM it would be difficult to implement a way to edit multiple databases at once. Well not necessarily difficult but it would take alot of time to do. I can add a way to export multiple databases into one file, but you won't be able to edit them and split them back out into the separate databases. Quote

Perhaps an export to a single mdb (or txt) with just name, and system would be good for now and I could manually check and crossreference with the db's and edit. Hopefully you understand how this is now important for the new "other" feature of Gameex. So, pretty please! But if you do ever get the time (and i do appreciate that you are a busy man), to implement it in an editable form at some stage - the more complete db's the more important it becomes. Thanks HK.
