Run PSX game from actual CD (epsxe)...best solution?

Hello everyone,

First off...I wanted to thank Tom for such a great program. I have been a user for quite a while and a registered user for a while too. Normally I have just lurked through the forums, as I usually can find any answer I need. But this question has been a bit elusive...

Here is what I hope I can do:

Be able to use a playstation emulator through GameEx (currently using epsxe 1.70) to load the actual CD for a number of games. Preferably I would have an option that says "Load Playstation Disc..." on the list of games. Then if I had any disc images they would also be listed there and I could either launch the physical CD I have already put in the drive or launch an image. It would be great to just run from an image for all my games, but I am low on space and not currently able to purchase more.

It seems like I just haven't seen a good description of how to just get the CD to load up (my main problem). So, I have done my research through the forums and have seen a few different solutions, one using emulator groups (from Tom) but don't know if this would let you do it both ways, a couple of different ways for batch files or autoit scripts...and ways to use sendkeys to navigate through epsxe's menu to make it load from cdrom (but it seems I need the gui on for this option? not very clean if so).

Any other thoughts that you guys have for your best solutions would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance!

Currently running 5 external harddrives each with 500 gigs and still have problems with space. What I did was rip my cd into iso etc. and put hem on cds and dvds. I then make up a map file for all the games I have on discs. That way GameEx gives me a list like you are looking for. I then hit play games and it plays the games on the cd. I have done this for most all game sytems that have large file size games. (Playstation, Sega CD, Saturn, PC-fx etc) works well for me. Only thing I have do do is know which disk has which game. I wrote a program that allows me to catagories what discs have what game. Would love one day for GameEx to read the cd for me and show me what games in my map file is on the disc.

Should be able to do the same thing with a map file for your cd games.

I believe you can set espxe up both ways in an emulator group. You wouldn' have to have it twice on your computer, Just set it up in two different slots in the Setup Wizard (or Advanced configuration, whichever you prefer) Then just use a group to merge the two lists. You can use groups to merge two (or more) different emualators as well, basically all Gameex does is merge the lists in those emulators.

Believe you are correct Tempest. I run both rom ripped games on discs and origional discs under one emulator. My map file covers the naming convictions so I don't have to set them up in groups or have seperate emulatiors.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments!!!

Good point on using emulator groups to merge the lists too...I hadn't thought of that for some reason.

So a couple more questions if I could... What format is a map file in? A plain text file? And is there a standard format for setting it up? I guess I haven't seen one of these yet.

Starbuck, it sounds as if you use your map file for both original and and rom discs...correct? I have my image/iso version of epsxe working properly, but now looking for the best way to set up my psx disc epsxe entry and it get it to load up the disc I have loaded (i.e. "Load Playstation Disc...")

Thanks again,

Hey I tried the new update to 9.32, very cool!!! Thanks again Tom!
