Been thinking about how cool it would be to be able to have a picture of a handheld on the screen with the emulator and GameEX displaying the game as you play on screen. I know that Handy for Lynx attempted that. The first problem I see is that when I play a handheld at a resolution other then full screen that the picture is not centered in the monitor. Does any one know of a way to tell GameEx where to display the game screen. Then if that is possible, can you then display a background for that game system so that you could see the DS, Lynx, Gamegear etc. on screen with the game playing on the imposed game screen. Really think that would add to the gaming experience.

GameEx doesn't do anything special with your emulators. All GameEx does is call the appropriate command line to launch the emulator how you want. If the emulator can support different screen locations and sizes, then you can send whatever command is necessary to move it via the command line. If it doesn't support resolution changes via the command line, there is another way.

It's possible that you could put together an AHK script that will do what you want.

Understand that GameEx only calls the commandline. Thought a script might be the way to position the screen. All the handhelds I've tested at the actual screen size of the handheld can be moved to a position that you want but doest stay there next time you run the emulator. My big issue is can GameEx display a background showing the handheld png.

I get what you're saying. A few handheld emulators have that capability but I never use it. But the ones that don't, GameEx don't have that capability. But yes there may be a way to script this. Might be a complicated thing to do but maybe not. Never gave it a try. But a script IMO is the only way to accomplish this. The script would have to display an image in the background (handheld image) and then position the window in the correct place.

Which emulators in particular are you wanting to do this to?

Being a game nut (curently runningn 128 systems thru GameEx) Of course I would like to do them all. To start I would like to see either Lynx or GBA. Lynx would be the easiest to start because Handy already has a picture file that could be used. THink this capability would be of a benefit for GameEx users.

The easiest way might be to use the script to change the background image of your desktop to the image you want used. Then just use the script to change the position of the window to the location that seems appropriate. When you quit, you would just need to change the background image back to whatever you had it set to initially.

There may be an easy way to display an image in the background, I just haven't put any time in checking via AHK.

Sounds like a plan. You could take it one step further and have a television displayed on screen and play your console games as they would appear on yout tv. Would impress your friends and i don't know of any other front end that gives you such an option. Also withregards to handhelds playing them at the size that they are normally played at adds to the detail and realism.

It also makes them impossible to see :P

is your vision going cause ya getting old or too many hours playing games

Naw, I'm just thinkin that a handheld like those Nintendo Mario Brother games or one of the other cheapo Gallery style ones displayed at the actual size would be like 5 pixels wide on a standard def TV!

Can see how some might not be worth doing. But i don't play many of the game and watch.

So you are primarily referring to handheld systems like GB, GBA, GG, Turbo Graphics Express, etc.? I thought most of those had at least one emu that already had the background? I know I've used GB and GG emu's that display an image of the handheld around the display, I just don't know which one it is. I have them setup, but I rarely play either.

Handy for lynx has 2. One of the old GB emulators had a partial screen view. I don't know of any others. None did it well. The images were not centered on the screen and in most cases cutoff so as not to be fully on the screen or was a poor scan. know of none ever done for NDS, turbo express or gba. All three will play at actual size but not centered in screen enless you drag it here and then changes everytime you reboot. Be neat if it would somehow tie in with the CPviewer.

Not that Im recommending other FE's but there is one called "@es evolution" that will run the emus in any skinned enviroment. It has support for alot of emus already. I played with it the other day. It looks nice. And is skinable.

Im attaching a couple sample pics... "yes mame and emus will play in the psp window"

Tho I must say I havent found anything out there to replace my gameex :)

VisualBoyAdvance already has that capability. Just need to apply a skin.

ok Got gameboy advance to work. Creaty a file under skins in VBA and put in the attched files. Outside of GameEX load the attached skin. Center the screen on your desktop and close emulator

Open up GameEx and play. Must set desktop to true in ini file for emulator in GameEX. Bmp file is for those who wants to edit picture.

Fusion will display the GG background... Just in case you didn't know that already. ;)
