Do I have to do something special to see controls in game?

As the title says I'm wondering what I have to do to make controls show in game. I press L in a mame game and it looks like something minimizes in the background and I am left with a black screen??? Am I supposed to see the controls that gameex displays before the game starts?

If the game has controls you should see them before the game starts, and by default by pressing L in game. Its working for me in the latest release with latest MAME. What versions are you running?

Did you change the path to controls.ini in the configs?

Yep, I always see the controls when the game starts. No problems there.

I am running the latest version of mame.

Is it maybe because I have my directories setup like this?

gameex: default dir

mame: c:\arcade\emulators\mame

roms: c:\arcade\roms\mame

I thought I replied to this yesterday....

I don't think your directories matter, as long as you have the paths set up correctly in gameex. Gameex specifically asks for the path to controls.ini in Advanced Mame Setup, so make sure that is right. Tom includes Control.ini, and other mame .ini files in gameex/data so maybe you should try pointing to those.

What I thought I said yesterday,is that I'm a big fan of Headkazes CPWizard. It allows you to create a control panel that replicates yours, and then displays the correct label next to the appropriate buttons. So if you play Tempest, it will show "Left" and "Right", next to your spinner, "Fire" next to button1, and "Super Zapper" next to button 2, with all unused controls faded out. Pretty cool, you should try it!

NICE! I just installed CPWizard. Didn't know it existed. Awesome software! Any other pieces of software I should check out Tempest???

Yeah, I like it!

For some reason it's not in the plugin section, I guess technically it's not a plugin, but I think alot of people miss it since it's not mentioned there. I'm not even sure if there's a link to it on the Gameex site, but there should be.

Other software...If you had lighted buttons, or a betabrite, there is the LCD/LED plugin, Check out this thread:

BTW: AFAIK there is no no mention of this in the plugin section either

Other than that, it just depends on what you want to do, and your interests. Let's make a challenge out of it. What Do you want Gameex to do?

I like Headkaze's CPWizard in that I can construct my own lookalike control panel and have it dynamically read the Mame controller info to so that controls as I've remapped them on my system (I have a 7-button setup where I'd like to use the bottom row for the main fire buttons and as a Neo Geo layout

i.e.

- 5 6 7

1 2 3 4

but I'd like a 3 on 3 remapped layout to use with fighters

i.e.

- 1 2 3

x 4 5 6

and I'm familiar enough with MAME controller setups in order to do so.

What I'm UNCLEAR about is how to get it (HeadKaze's app) to replace the default control panel viewer in GameEx. The built-in one isn't aware of my remappings and runs off a different system and I think Tom admitted it was embryonic in some doco I once read.

At the moment I use the GameEx configuration to turn this VIEW CONTROL option off. Then, since CPwizard is running in the background I can within the game have P both Pause the game and bring up the overlay.

Is there anyway I can get CPwizard to display through GameEx BEFORE a game is launched however (i.e. where the original GameEx display of the panel is)? Will Tom & Headkaze ever consent to incorporating this into the main GameEx program or Tom to allow some flag to use this is preference?

*N.B.* Will make this its own post which it probably should have been from the get go.

FYI: The LCD/LED plugin is included with GameEx.
