How to apply mame update packs?

I am wondering how you apply mame update packs to existing mame roms?

I notice the update pack files are too small to be the full rom, so I don't believe you just copy the update rom over the rom file...

They generally only contain the rom parts that have changed since the last release

update your romfiles with the contents or use clrmnane!

use your friendly google search for clrmame help!
