Hi,

I'm a newbe but have some how been able to set up a lot of emulators through GameEx and most are running fine. However I have one problem that has me pulling out my hair.

I cant get GameEx to generate a game list for my commodore 64 game ROMs. I know the emulator Winvice will run them because I can get it to load and run the ROMs with another frountend (gameloader I think it was). Anyways, all my paths seem right. Below my ROM filter entrie I have listed through the GameEx congif program (I have also tried to leave it blank):

ROMFilter=*.prg;*.d64;*.t64;*.tap;*.p00;*.g64;*.crt;*.g41;*.g64;*.lnx;*.z64

I noticed al the ROMs are zipped and grouped in different folders (about 30 or so). Is this right? Do I need to take them all out and put them all in just one folder?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I forgot to say that I did try the .zip filter entry. Nothing happened when I did.

Your problem for what I can see is that you have your ROMs in subfolders. Try putting all ROMs into one folder or just try pointing to one of the folders you already have to verify.

I thought you had decided Vice didn't like zips....

I haven't had time to play!

I haven't had time to play with it myself but he said he had it working outside of GameEx So maybe it does. I'll have to mess around with it tomorrow and see what I come up with. When I first tried I couldn't get zips to work nor controls.

Ok, here's a dumb question; Where are the emu config files stored? I tried looking for them before and could not find them.

Thanks, Dave

Not sure why the romfilter line was cut off when I posted this. The last entry is ;*.ZIP and there is no space between lines.

Thanks, Dave

Put the P back on the end of Zip. Fix the blank entry and Import the config into emu slot 20 or any open spot and re-test.

Roms in Sub folders dont work. So place a handfull of Roms in one directory and see if thos pop up.

Brian,

If roms in subfolders don't work, then what does "romsinfolders=true" Mean? Seriously, is it a bug?

Schulpius,

I got that you don't need to pee... :lol:

Would it make a difference that the extension is .ZIP, insted of .zip?

Edit: I changed the .zip extension on one of my zips to .asd, and 7z still unzipped it! So, I guess that's not it! :blink:

@FrEquenCy

I copied this from the Vice website:

It is also possible to attach disk or tape images that have been compressed through various algorithms; compression formats are identified from the file extension. The following formats are supported (the expected file name extension is in parenthesis):

  • GNU Zip (.gz or .z);
  • BZip version 2 (.bz2);
  • PkZip (.zip);
  • GNU Zipped TAR archives (.tar.gz, .tgz);
  • Zoo (.zoo).

PkZip, tar.gz, lha and zoo support is read-only and always uses the first T64 or D64 file in the archive. So archives containing multiple files will always be handled as if they contain only a single file.

I hope that the last part is worthy of a post, because I don't think the rest of it was!

Need to pee... Very funny.... I get it. ;)

On subject, I've got this figured out now with the help of you guys. Thanks! The problem was the sub folders. After I pointed the path to one of them and had the proper extension listed in the Romfilter all the zipped games in that folder showed up. I guess I need to put them all in one folder and point to that.

Now that I have that working; each game has a weird name. It shows the file name (a few letters followed by some numbers) and not the name of the game. I heard that there is a program that will convert those file names into the actual game names. Does anybody know where I can get that program?

Thanks again!

Set the database to "[console] C64" (or whatever it's called). If your games are named according to No-Intro or GoodName format, you should be good to go!

I could be wrong, but isn't the database for informational purposes? (manufacurer, year, description, etc)

I think that you meant "map file"

If you have a mapfile for the C64, Could you upload it, because I don't have it... :(

I don't have a database for the C64 either.... :P

I haven't seen a map for C64 for the names should fine. Just use the latest dat from no-intro and rename your roms using clrmame or romcenter. Or can use good tools. Which ever you prefer.

It's true that map files are used with emulators to provide a mapping between rom filename and game name. AFAIK, GameEx will automatically generate a map file based on the database though. I haven't had a problem with this myself, but I know that some people have resorted to building their own map files. I would try the database first since it's useful stuff, but if that doesn't provide the look that you are going for, a map file is the ultimate solution.

I did not know this...Thanks for letting me know! :)

After doing some searching, both here, and at the Gameex site, I came full circle, and found the [PC] Commodore 64 database right where it should be on my computer. :blink: (yesterday, I said I didn't have it)
