Pacman still being filtered after saying not to filter?

Am I doing something wrong here? GameEx is set to "clones only if better" and I typed "pacman" (without quotes) in the do not filter box. After doing a gamelist update the original is still not there. Any ideas?

Try running pacman from the command line to verify that it's not considered a broken game and that it's the correct version of the rom for your version of MAME. You can just go to the mame directory and run:

mame.exe pacman

If you have your roms in another location than mame\roms and you don't have the location called out in the MAME.ini file, you will need to add the -romdir switch with your location.

This is totally off the top of my head, but I think that pac-man is not the original version.

The original is "puckman", and "pacman" is a clone.

So I believe the "clones only if better" filter would eliminate "pacman" before the do not filter had a chance to leave it.

Of course that all depends on which filter goes first.

I'm not sure, but moving "puckman" out of your roms directory might solve the problem. (update list)

I would like to know if that works :) .

Actually, the "do not filter" items should be excluded from all filters no matter what. Pacman is one clone of Puckman, so that is correct that it would be filtered by "clones unless better", but it should still show up if you explicitly override it. I'm not sure why it isn't there unless GameEx has decided it's not a valid rom. On way to check that would be to turn off the "verify roms" filter and update your list.

I installed Gameex on my laptop so I could check things while responding to answers in the forums, without having to run up and down the stairs (or back and forth to Michigan ;) ).

I did not make any changes to the config. The default values in question are:

Game Filter: Japan;Korea;Asia;Hispanic;Bootleg;French;German;Hack;Prototype;Hardware

Don't filter these roms: pacman;splatter

No Clones: I want clones

I just found it interesting that Tom says he wants clones, and don't filter pacman....???

It doesn't sound like either one of us knows for sure how Tom has this set up. I Would have guessed that the "don't filter these roms" would only apply to the "game filter", but I can certainly see advantages to what you describe.

@cero21 - you could also try changing the clones setting to "I want clones" and update your list. I would like to see you do it with all other settings the same as before, then we will see what effect the "clones" setting has regarding "don't filter these roms setting"

Does that make sense?

Before this goes any further, I have pacman showing on my games list.

Can you guys that are having the issues please post your Gameex log and gameex.INI

This way I can see your settings/config and mame version etc.....

The DO NOT FILTER works fine where I have used it... Eg... Galaga is an IMPERFECT game.. I have only working games defined in my gameex.ini

So by default its not there.. Until I add the rom to that list. Same for SFIII's They work fine but have slight emulation issues.. When I add those roms and update my list I can choose them.

I like to see what going on.. Later Ill post my config so you guys can take a look also.

This is fixed and will be in the next release

Well, I think it's a a shame. I wanted to see how many posts we could accumulate on getting pacman to show up in the list. ;)

Now Tom has ruined all my fun! :P

If it makes you feel better, there was a thread a few months back about pacman too. You could count those posts in your tally...

And a user named "Pacman", I'm feeling better already...
