Hi ,

I setup the MAME 32 Emu in Gamex by downloading and setup with the Configuration Wizard.

After pointing to all my relevant path, I start Gameex. When I choose MAME it takes a while to create the gamelists. But some games in the list won´t start from Gameex. When I try to start the game, gameex will return to the gamelist without starting MAME. It happened not to all games.

I think the Roms are not bad, when I start them from the MAME32 Windows GUI all works fine.

Does anyone know the solution or maybe have some hints what to do ?

In order to figure this out, there's a couple things you need to do. First, if you want help from this forum, you must pretty much always post you log containing the problem (the whole log file). Second, since this is a problem with a game launching and is unlikely a problem with GameEx, you will want to run the "Run Last Game.bat" file in the GameEx Start menu folder. When you run it, it will not work (presumably), but that's ok. What you need to do is edit this file and add "PAUSE" as a new line. Run it again and see what the error is. If you figure out the error (which is 99% chance a command line argument problem), we can get it going.

Btw, if you are using GameEx, you really don't need the MAME32 front end, so I suggest using vanilla MAME instead. MAME32 will work, but most people use the standard version which is a little easier to work with from the command line.

Thank you for your reply. I thought setting up Mame is much easier.

I use the Mame Version v0.109 and most of the games works fine without gameex.

I know there are diffenrent versions of mame, but i thought that the latest mame release will guarantee that more games works than a earlier release of mame. What do you mean with Vanilla Mame ? Is is an official Mame Version.

Where can I get it from, to test this with my Roms ?

For the first Time I used the downloaded Mame Versions of the Gamex Setup Wizard, to test how many roms work. When I try the Advance MAME , I get the error message " unknown command line option rompath " by every game :-(

btw, I post my log file , maybe the solution is simple for experts like you.

Denoiser,

I would like to preface this with "I'm not the smartest person here..."

Vanilla mame is the term they like to use to refer to the command line version of mame (no GUI built in)

My first concern is that you are using Mame 109, but your rom path may indicate that your roms are for mame 0.82 (assuming that the folder name "mame082b\roms" is meaningful). I don't know if you are aware of this, but every version of mame has a matching romset. So if you are using Mame 109, your roms should be 109 as well. You can use a program like Clrmamepro to check and fix your roms. There is a tutorial on CMP here: http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/

I would first try turning off "verify roms" in "advanced mame configuration" and see if that helps your games run.

Also, I think you may be confused about "advancemame". Advancemame is another version of mame (a different emulator) if you do not have the "advancemame emulator" you will want to turn "use AdvanceMame" to NO.

The confusion comes in, because for the most part, the section in gameex configuration called "advanced Mame" is for use with Mame32, and "vanilla" Mame (Except the 4 Advancemame lines)

I hope that makes sense, because it can be confusing.

Edit: you should also set "allow imperfect roms" to yes.

Sorry, I should clarify my references:

"vanilla" MAME = The official release by the MAMEdev team

MAMEUI = Formerly known as MAME32

AdvanceMAME = Another version of MAME that was modified to improve output on TV's and arcade monitors

Analog MAME+ = A version of MAME specifically modified to work with analog controls (spinners, steering wheels, track balls, light guns). Most of the code from this project has been incorporated into the "vanilla" MAME code (and thus everything else that uses it's source), so the project has essentially died off.

There are countless other versions out there, but these are the main ones people around here talk about. Also, while you are not required to update your roms with each release, if a rom does get updated/redumped, it will no longer work. It is ALWAYS best to run the same version of MAME as your roms.

Hi , I like to say thanks for all the good Advice.

I tried all your hints, but I can´t figure out what´s wrong. To Remember, all the Games works fine at Mame32. I thought forthcoming Releases of Mame should be run more games.

I never thought that every Mame Version needs the matching rom set.

Tempest :

I only copied my mame roms folder in the mame 082b Directory to try whats the reason when some Roms don´t want to start from Gameex. It does not mean, that they belong to this Mame Version. I found my Mame Rom Set ( about 5 GB, surely not all games :-) in the www and I own my Set for 4 years . Since I found the nice tool gameex for all my Emus I used my Mame roms with Mame 32 ( The one with the Windows GUI , to avoid typing all the horrible dos commands)

I turned of the option Verify Roms, and also set allow imperfect roms, but I get the same result. Some Games start and some other don´t do this. I found the following Topic, and I think here´s exact the same Error, maybe we can solve the problem alltogether.

Bkenobi :

How can I figure out which Rom Version I own , My Mame32 Directory has a subdirectory called roms. This folder contain all my games in zip format and many game subfolders.

btw : I like the actually Version of Mame32 , i mean this one that gameex downloads for itself when I use the setup Wizard, I think it´s the Version 0.109. But I like to play all my games from gameex.

In advanced mame settings, try setting "use bezel", to don't use bezels.

If this works, I want a really big show of appreciation - It's not for my ego, as much as for the other guys.... ;)

Do I smell a cut and paste here? Could be 2 for 2

If your set is 4 years old and you are trying to run a current version of MAME (0.124a last I checked), then you *definitely* need to consider updating. Most roms are probably the same, but there are periodic redumps required to correct certain issues. I would guess that after 4 years, there's quite a few in that boat. Also, you won't have the newer games that you are trying to get working anyway since they didn't exist in your set. I think the current rom set is ~15GB, so yeah, your 5GB set is a little short...
