Hello all,

I have started a new project/renovation. Since I am no woodworking genius like Tempest. I thought I would post up here to get feedback and suggestions. This all started out about 3 weeks ago with me wanting a NFL Blitz machine, after research on system 16 I decided I really wanted was The Sportstation boardset with "Vegas" hardware. So I went to the vendor to purchase the boards and ended up twisting his arm to get this cab. Also along the way I was lucky enough to snag a clean NFL Blitz machine which can be seen on another thread here. Back to the subject, this used to be a Area 51. What I am thinking is to cover it in laminate and definately get some more t-molding. Unless someone else points out some idea that will work better than laminating. So Tempest get offa yer duff and help me make this thing a work of art ;)

Where the H*ll is Tempest when I need his input? Probably slacking no doubt. ;)

To be more specific...slacking in Florida!

I can't tell you a whole lot from the pictures, but from what I've seen so far you won't have any trouble making the right decisions.

I'm always here if you need to give somebody crap. ;)

Wow  send me some of that warm weather. it is a bit brisk here in Indiana. Someone else over on BYOAC said laminate was a good choice. I just wanted to ask someone who woodworks. I guess I'll have to wait till you get thru slacking in Florida. Figures, I need help with my cab and you are on yer duff in Florida :(;)

Yeah, my wife said it was snowing back home...

Laminate is nice, but it can be a pain to work with. I don't have alot of experience with it...the hardest thing is that contact adhesive is used, and they call it "contact" adhesive for a reason. It is used by applying adhesive to both the laminate, and the surface you are attaching it to. Once you allow the two surfaces to "contact" each other, it's (almost) impossible to move the laminate around (you can't slide it) so you have to be sure it's in the proper posistion first.

A good tip for this is to use the slats from a window blind (just cut the strings) and place them on top of the glued surface, and then the laminate (with one side glued) on top of the slats. When you have the laminate in posistion, slide the slats out one by one. I don't know if you've worked with laminate before, but cut the pieces big, and then use a router with a "laminate trimmer" bit (a good one will have a bearing on it) to cut the laminate back to the edge of the sub surface. If you want sharp inside corners, you will have to finish them with a file (since the trim bit is round, it will leave a radius) however, with t-moulding, it might be fine to leave the small radius.

To be honest, I painted mine, and I will probably paint the new one as well....

This is the second opinion I have had for laminate. It seems the best way to go. I would paint but I need to cover the holes where the guns used to go. I know I am taking the easy way out. Thanx Tempest and take care. :) Now I see why my JAMMA cab is not done yet. ;)

If you have to finish the surface anyway, there are easy ways to fill those holes. The best way I can think of is taking a circle cutter drill bit and cut it to as close to the right size as possible (preferably a bit small). Then, use wood glue, a backer strip, and brads or staples to attach the piece. Finally, use wood putty to fill the hole between the two pieces. After a bit of sanding (and perhaps a second coat of putty depending on the gap), just apply primer and paint. I personally have done this twice and find it easy and fun. If you want a laminate finish, then you already have your answer. Laminate does make for a more durable and easier to clean surface, but it's a royal pain in the ass to install IMO. Keep in mind that I haven't installed laminate before, but I have worked with contact cement and relatively large material...it's not fun.

Thanx Bkenobi,

Actually I have worked with laminate before. The guy that did the woodwork for my single control panels is gonna help me. I am also l-a-z-y. Laminate gives a easy way out for me. Especially since I suck at sanding and painting. :)
