You know I am happy to host this, and buy any software etc for this. The main issue for me is that I dont know how and dont have time to manage it.

Managing it is the key.. you may be able to add IRC support using JAVA for free. When I think of IRC I think of file sharing. not chatting..

But thats just me.. :)

Leave that to me. Everyone is familiar with IRC. Foreverchat is a quiet network and has good people on it. It is emulation related. I have to talk to a couple of people then I will try to make this happen

Hey just think about it peeps could file share and chat in real time. Just think some people who write plugins could release them there first etc. And I could harasss Tempest and tell him to hurry up and make my cab for JAMMA. He's such a slaker ;)

CPWizard's IRC client currently connects to BYOAC's IRC channel #byoac @ irc.scifi-fans.net:7000 but you can change that in the settings. Foreverchat seems like a popular server. So if we set up a channel on Foreverchat Tom could purchase a licence for JPilot Java IRC client (which is $50 US) and we could either connect from his website or using a client like mIRC.

You need to have a few full time op's in there plus a full time bot like EggDrop to hold op status and also auto-op human ops when they join the room. Bots can also run scripts like quiz questions and things like that.

Another option is to update the current chat room to something like FlashChat which I think is better than the current one. FlashChat is only $5 too. Downside is it doesn't connect to an IRC server so the only way to access it would be through the website.

To be honest though I just don't think many people would use it.

Im happy to spend the cash but not manage it, but I have to agree I dont think it will be used that much. There's plenty of places to chat already that dont get used much. The only real way to do it is have a schedule to get together, and its probably best to have it only every once in a while.

Its fun occasionaly though, I agree.

I know I'm going to be sorry for saying this, but is that all you guys got? ;)

I still think it would be nice to click on somebody's name that you see reading a topic (uder the pretense of saying HI), it could be used for people like me to say "I think the problem is this", "No?","Why not?","Oh...I see"

My correct answer ratio might even go 1:1

I hear that if you don't keep your ratio up, that you can get banned

Your welcome to set things up, like I said there needs to be a perminent bot. Setting up an IRC channel is a simple matter of /join but holding the room is something that requires a dedicated person 24/7 (or at least their bot). You have to be ready for net splits and possible channel take overs. I know op's on IRC and they spend all day logged into their clients. Personally I think it can be a bit too distracting for me to get work done. I find the forums distracting enough. Hey if you can get people going there I'm all for it. The BYOAC IRC channel has about 8 or so people in there at one time which is pretty good.

The only issue I forsee with IRC is that it won't be as easy for some users to get answers to questions without asking repeatedly the same questions. Lots of users use this forum and never even have to ask for help by just searching what's already there...

Well when I first mentioned it, I had no intention of using it for support. Was just a place for us to all bs at. Of course the forums is the place for support that way we can search for previous posts. A place for chatting was suggested for just that. I think it would separate the junk from the support in the forums.

Tom, do you have any statistics on how many different people come to this site regularly as opposed to only when they have a problem? I think a big reason that there is not many people using chat is that there is so few of us here regularly or somewhat regularly. Then you have the problem of time zones and whatnot. Maybe we could take a poll of what times people are available and then set a time once or twice a week to meet in the chat we already have.

Say every sunday and wednesday at 8:00pm for example.

As far as kailera, Ive never used it, so I dont know how easy it is to setup, but like someone mentioned, is there a problem with using it on the emulators? Was it a no no because it was going to be integrated in gameex, or just because we shouldnt be talking about it on this forum?

Well we have over 3000 members and 20 or so actively contributing members. It would be a safe assumption most users are non active of the ones that are probably rarley post.

Personally I lurked on the forum for a few months before I registered and starting posting. And at first it was sparatic even going weeks apart.

By all means start a thread and Im sure someone will show up. Personally I see the most people on Early in the morning and around 6pm.

Im in southern cali.

As far as the kalleria goes its just best not to attract the wrong kind of attention to gameex.

Certain builds of mame allow this functionality.. Obviously Mamedev doesnt condone it so setting up a server here for its purpose may send the wrong message.

We tend to be a little relaxed around here.

On the same token I'd hardly expect people over here to be understanding and supportive of a hacked version of gameex.

So in short it was a nice idea but this is not the place :)

I couldn't help but notice that Winkawaks has built in kalleria....

Hmm maybe I will look into that. Is my upright JAMMA cab done yet?

I seem to get a lot of hits on the main web site around those hours too (Like now). I know most folks who register are from the states, so it would seem to make sense I guess start work, end of work. I think it would need to be at weekend though, as now is a little late in Europe. I think those times may work out down under too for HK (assuming he's been coding through the night like usual :) )

Anyone read the forums over at Mameworld? Looks like they don't mind netplay. Just want things done correctly. It's a good read.

I think I have. I just didnt see any point in arguing over it. I think the best decision was made. Although it would have been fun.

Np. I think the misconception about Mame Devs, is they don't want Net Play. After the read. I can see thats not the case.
