I am sorry to see that Kailerra support has been killed. All my years of being around the project I have seen one thing. They are a goofy lot. If someone writes something that favors gameplay that is not in their "Inner Circle" they are full steam against it. It's like "We Wrote This Incredible Piece Of Software To Preserve History But Don't You DARE Have Fun Using It" But at the same time they do things on their own terms that enhances gameplay. It is very weird to me. As far as attracting the wrong crowd etc. to stop this you would have to kill the project entirely. Kaillerra would not make or break Mame. I have heard of several cases of "Illegal Money Making Mamecabs" But the project is still going strong (I am glad of this). So to make a big fuss about netplay is pointless noone would be profiting offa this. This favors us (the end user) so naturally it is frowned upon moreso that these money making cabs I've heard about. Just my 2 cents since other thread was locked.

Perhaps MAME feels it loses the legs they stand on if primary focus is driven towrad gameplay innovations. And make thier arguments about its focus illigitimate. Thier is always somebody looking to capitalise on thier hard work and I understand why they are offended when someone goes againsed their wishes.

There is also a big diffrence between hosting a kalliera server.. (Which works with any kalleria supporting emulator) and building kalliera enabled new build of MAME... Calling it a mame derivitive and prancing about on the web with it.

For me emulation is supposed to be fun.. When I have to spend more time worrying about weather something is right or not than actually getting stuff done it takes the fun out of it for me.

Perhaps the fault is my own.. I did advertise play mame with other gameex users. Its a controversal subject and totally non gameex related. Perhaps I shouldn't have brought it here in the first place.

My reason to do this was motivated by an idea to add fluff to the forum.. I love doing tech supprt but also wanted add a bit of fun.. all work and no play makes... Well you know.. I though this was a good idea... So its not that im bent about setting up a sever for us.. I was just looking on adding something fun for us forum users..

Well as far as fun and trying not to sound like a teenager again but had fun just chatting with you all yesterday. LOL. It was nice to be able to chat. When I first started at the forum here I would check the GameEx Chat to see if anyone was ever there. Gave up as I noticed I was the only one who ever was. LOL.

If it could be intergrated in the forum it would get alot more use... Im not talking about a link but perhaps a window that can be enabled and disabled.

When your logged into the forum your logged into the chat and can see both forum and chat.

As I mentioned yesterday, It sure would keep from flooding the forum with useless stuff that we tend to chat about. LOL. Maybe an IRC?

Ben built Irc support in his Cpwizard I dont think that part really got off the ground. Tho it was a great idea.

Truth be told Mame dev *probably* could care less about a kalleria server.. Kalliera isnt their product.

Unless you setup a fund for all of us to travel and put up hotel expenses for us to come over each of our houses to play on our Mamecabs I'm outta Ideas I wasn't tryin to be a jerk just so you know, I was just giving my observation of things being a lil hypocritical on their part. I could give some situations to back up my claims but I'ma leave it alone on that point. I just hope that maybe one day us forum users could play each other in some games (Killer Instinct and CPS-2 & 3 come to mind here). I remember playing a version of mame around about the time CPS-2 was poppin and it was fun playing against someone on the other side of the world. For us Mame is about fun and preserving history. Cause if it weren't for Mame a part of our growing up would be gone (at least for me anyway) Today's games have absolutely no appeal to me. That's why I don't own a PS3 or a XBOX360. I have an XBOX but it sits and collects dust.When I had a G/F she played it more than I did. The only console I would consider buying is a WII only because of Metal Slug Anthology. Mame also encourages us to buy hardware (at least it did for me) I am about to obtain a NFL Blitz 2000/NBA Showtime On NBC machine. I have also bought a NFL Blitz 99 boardset and am about to attempt a JAMMA cab. The last thing I am going to try to obtain is the NAOMI system. I should have the $$ around May or June. So don't ban me plz as it was just my 2cents on the situation.

I like this idea, sometimes I wonder if I'm pushing things to far so far as humor goes, I know there is at least one person out there who is wondering why they have to read my crap, when all they want is an answer. I thought a couple of days ago about starting a thread just to B.S. in, but my monologues aren't that funny. Hehe see I don't even want a three sides cocktail table anymore (I'm spoiled want a big monitor) I now need a full upright cab that will accomodate a 27 in Monitor or 33in LCDTV. The Kaillera build of Mame AFAIK did release it's source code, but the problem was the actual Kaillera server and client dll source was not released along with it. I'm not sure if the author of Kaillera was even involved in that Mame derivitive, but they needed to use some sort of system for the communication over the Net. Obviously they couldn't find one open source and decided to go ahead and release it anyway. Shame really.

I think the Mame developers are against people breaking their license, not the fact of people using the Kaillera build to play some Mame games online. But I have to say it probably would annoy them if we were promoting the build by running our own server and inviting people from here. It's a shame because I thought it was a good idea and I think Brian is trying to pump a bit of fun into this forum. And I certainly wouldn't class the type of people that come here in the same vein online Mame might attract otherwise.

I just want to point out that I wasn't trying to be an ass in the other thread. I had read in multiple threads over multiple forums about certain perceptions of certain programs. I have my own thoughts as to what should be or not be allowed regarding Mame but I generally try and be respectful of Mamedev as domost people who use their program. I simply wanted to make sure that everyone had a chance to read their position so an informed decision could be reached.

I sent Brian a PM and said that I think he made a prudent decision but it may not have been the best/right decision for everyone.

I do think that this is the best forum on the internet. Everyone is extremely friendly, more than gracious with time and answers, and an amazing resource for us.

We all would like Kaillera support! That's no secret. However, the bottom line is that MAME machines were never intended to play people online, so I understand why that particular feature would step on a few toes. I still feel the cheat engine in MAME should be removed also. If it's an argument of authenticity, why do we have all these features that a real cab could never accomplish? Save states: Gone. Video creation: Gone. Board re-creation is the ultimate goal, but these features contradict that.

Sometimes it seems that MAME devs are full of s**t when it comes to the 'authenticity' issue, and it sucks when the MAME community suffers over it. That's why we have unofficial MAME builds that add support that the MAME team shuns. I can deal with the fact we may never have Kaillera support, but c'mon! Don't give us some things and disallow others. It should be all or nothing, or they're just contradicting themselves.

I guess I'm just frustrated by the way we're forced to smell the dev's s**t but we're not allowed to complain. Maybe that's just me.

Some forums have a "paging system" where you can send instant messages back and forth to people. They pop up in a window. I think PM's are pretty much the same thing though. There are also things called "shout boxes" which are like mini chatrooms where people can send and recieve messages instantly but from my experience they are always full of trash.
