Hello ,

I understand the working and the usage of map file in Gameex, but I have a question.

The names of my Roms in my Folders doesn´t match with the ones in the included Map Files, so gameex displays all the gamenames taken from the map file but the games won´t start .

Is there a easy way to handle or edit map files in Gameex ? I don´t want to rename so many game names from my games folders manually so that they match with the entries in the map file.

In the past I Used dat files to rename my roms, but how can I do this in gameex.

For example : I use the [Console] Nintendo SNES - Europe.map file and get over 500 Game Entries in Gameex , point to my rom path of my Snes Games , but they won´t start until I changed the name of the rom file. I don´t want to do this for so many games.

What´s the best way to do this ?

Best Regards, denoiser

You dont need to use the map files at all. Just remove the map file location from your emulators config and gameex will show only the games you have. I makes a map file stored in a different location if you want to edit it yourself.

Its also best to still use dat files in the same manner as you did before, completely seperate from gameex. GoodName or Nointro are the most popular formats.

thank you LB11. Yes it´s true I can only Point to my Roms Folder, without using any map file. But the result is that I have more than 3000 Snes Games :-), and I want to have only the 500 european games. I think the only way is to create another Folder with my 500 favorite Games and point to them, right ?

Use good tools and download the snes dat. This will rename your roms to the correct naming scheme.

Then you can use a rommanager to move all euro to another folder. Then tell gameeex to look for roms in that folder.

thanks Brian, I´ve done all you wrote but it don´t work. In the included gameex map file [Console] Nintendo SNES - Europe.map the game names are different. For example : the first game name in the map file is : 90 Minutes - European Prime Goal (Europe).zip , and for my understanding gameex will look exactly for this file name in my rom folder. When there is a different game name the game won´t start until I changed the name. Good Tools ( Good Windows) don´t rename my roms exatly so that they will match with the game names shown in the . map file . Do you know what I mean ?

That or make a map file based off your set that you have. I'm not sure what set the included map files are made for. So creating your own map based off your set would be the way I would go instead of moving all your files around. I like to keep my roms in the same folder for easier management and updates.

okay, I can make my own map files depending on my rom collection, but it´s a lot of work typing so many Games in an editor, cause gameex map files requires two entries in a row. Is there a easier way, does anybody have some hints or good ideas ?

Can use a regular expression to extract what you need from the dat to make your map file. What is your romset based off of? No-intro, Goodtools, etc....?

I have the Goodtools Collection with about 11000 Files for my Snes. What did you mean with regular expression. I know that i´m able to open every Dat File with a tool like an editor and look at all entries but how can I make a .map file ?

A map file wants to have two name in a row. One for the rom file , and one for the Game name.

Make a dat based off your romset and I'll take a look.

It´s only a short part of it and it was created with the Tool " Datutil " . It´s a dos based tool to create those dat files, depending on your Rom Folder.

Do you use care about all the bad dumps and hacks? If not I suggest rebuilding your roms based off a No-Intro dat. Many others will agree.

Or if not willing to do that I suggest using UnGoodMerge found in the goodtools forum. This tool will filter out your roms the way you're looking for. Probably the easiest way to go.

Hello fRequEnCy ,

thanks for your help. I think thats the best way for me instead creating a map file for gameex manually for my own.

I take a look at UnGoodmerge and try to work with this tool. When I want to rebuild my roms with CLR Mame Pro I have to use a No Intro Dat ? From where can I get these No-Intro Dat files ? I haven´t found these files at this time.

Well if you're just gonna rebuild your set to No-Intro then no need to mess with UnGoodMerge. Just rebuild your set and then create map files for the Regions that you want. I'll help you with the map files. No-Intro dats for clrmame pro can be found here.

After you rebuild I'll get you going to creating a map for your regions.

Another possibly simpler method would be to use plain old windows search feature.

Open the folder with all the roms in search. Then search for *(E)*.* That would give you all the roms that have the (E) in the filename denoting euro. (Change it to whatever your files have)

Then simply select them all and drag them to a new folder. DONE

Hello ,

many thanks to fRequEnCy and LB 11 for your help.

LB11: The search function is simple and useful, sometimes its so easy

I have found another tool based on UnGoodMerge , its called " romdeleter " and makes nothing more than filtering your rom folder and delete the roms you didn´t find useful for your Collection.

After done this, I simply point GameEx exactly to this rom folder , maybe I call it " my fav roms" ,

without creating a map file. Thats more than enough for me

Best Regards, Denoiser

Im glad you got it working. I personally would never use custom map files if they aren't needed. Only for things like raine which doesn't use normal names for roms and you dont know what they all are.
